Windows XP build 2223
|Build of Windows XP|
|Timebomb||2001-06-30 (+445 days)|
Windows XP build 2223 is a build of Windows XP. This build identifies itself as "Whistler 2001" in the start menu and login screensaver. This build is the last build to include the HAL for the SGI Visual Workstation 320 and 540 (
HALBORG.DLL), and is also the last build to support the 486 processor. It is set to hibernate by default, much like Windows Neptune build 5111.1.
New features and changes[edit | edit source]
- This build has updated the Neptune-style login screen.
- The taskbar has gained a minor update when applications are open and selected.
- Notification bubbles are now introduced, which allows notifications on the taskbar to pop-up a message to the user.
Business Theme[edit | edit source]
Contrary to popular belief, build 2223 is actually the first build to have new theming, being an early version of Watercolor called Business. The theming of 2223 is in the file
Business.thx, however it is largely incomplete, buggy, and the UI for it is missing. Adrian of the Airesoft blog released a working UXtheme file to allow the theme to be enabled.
The theme, when enabled, changes the design of all windows to include a blue border with lighter gray shades. The theme was meant to engage in a more user-friendly experience for home users. It is buggy; the theme can often cut out parts of the window and some features such as displaying menus don't work or cause instability. Registry entries (located in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ThemeManager) modify how the theme works:
ThemeName: Location of the theme file
EnableFrame: If set to 1, enables the blue borders on the windows.
TargetApp: Determines the application that will use the theme. If this value is blank, the theming will apply to all applications.
The initial theme file contains comments regarding to changing the color of the theme. If these comments are uncommented out, the theme will utilize color based on the settings of the theme file.
New Sound Setting Applet[edit | edit source]
The new sound setting applet that would be used in the RTM of Windows XP is included on this build but there is no way to normally have the applet open. However, Adrian also provided an executable that allows the applet to open.
ClearType font rendering[edit | edit source]
FontSmoothingType DWORD value is set to 2 in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop, the user will be able to enable the ClearType font rendering upon reloading Windows Explorer. ClearType font smoothing wouldn't be enabled by default until Longhorn build 4074.
OOBE[edit | edit source]
An out-of-the-box experience is ported from a Windows ME build onto this build. Much like in the Windows ME builds, it can be run by executing
C:\Windows\System32\oobe\msoobe.exe /f. There is no way to get past the product key entry portion of the OOBE, but it can be skipped via the debug skip button. After the OOBE is completed, it will loop back to the start after the user presses Finish on the final screen, forcing the user to terminate the process. Merlin does not function and pressing him on the corner does nothing.
Start Page[edit | edit source]
There is code in
shell32.dll to allow a Start Page to load, which was present in some Neptune and Millennium builds. It requires registry modification and a patched
webvw.dll in order to work.
