Windows NT 4.0 build 1314 is the official Beta 2 build of Windows NT 4.0, released to testers on 13 May 1996.[1] The German localization of the Workstation and Server SKU were leaked by Dynasty on 7 June 1996 and was later reshared on OSBetaArchive on 25 December 2015, along with a few other builds.[2]

This is one of the few beta builds of Windows available in the MIPS and PowerPC architectures, in addition to the x86 and DEC Alpha architectures.

The Lexicon 

Windows NT 4.0 Server Beta 2 (build 1314)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Beta 2 is more stable than beta 1, and has additional driver
support.  Windows NT 4.0 offers the stability and full 32-bit
performance of NT with the ease of use (explorer interface) of Windows
95.  It should run most Windows 95 32-bit applications natively, 16-bit
Windows applications, and most DOS applications. Games actually run at a
decent speed under it now.

To install, unzip all ARJ files to c:\i386 (or alternative temp
directory).  Extract all files from the arj (arj x nt4svb2.arj -v -y).

If you are running in Windows NT already, type "winnt32" to install.  If
you are running in DOS or Windows 95, type "winnt" to install.

It's preferable to use the "/b" switch to avoid making boot floppies.

Changes[edit | edit source]

  • Moved certain items in the Start menu.
  • Updated HyperTerminal.
  • Introduced the "German (IBM)" keyboard layout, although the keyboard file is missing and causes setup to end abruptly.
  • The TCP/IP protocol is now installed by default alongside the "NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible" one, replacing NetBEUI.
  • The "The Internet" desktop shortcut was renamed to "Internet Explorer".
  • On PowerPC, the kernel initialisation now sets up initial BATs with a variable size as calculated by the bootloader. Previously it hardcoded a size of 8MB, requiring workarounds in the ARC firmware to ensure older builds' bootloaders would not load any binary above the low 8MB of RAM.
