Windows Media Player 7.0 is a version of Windows Media Player released in June 2000 for Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 98 and Windows 2000. It dramatically changed the user interface compared to previous versions. This is the last version of Windows Media Player to run on Windows 95; the following version, Windows Media Player 7.1, only supports Windows 98 and later, though it can be unofficially installed on Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 by extracting the installer package and replacing setup_wm.exe
with one from the WMP 7.0 installer.
A near-final, pre-release version is included in the RTM release of Windows Me.[1]
Windows Media Player 7 was not marketed as Windows NT 4.0 compatible, but it still allows users to install it on the aforementioned operating system; this will however cause problems with the Service Control Manager due to a service failing to start. Windows Media Player 7 cannot be uninstalled in favor of 6 as doing that will warn that the system is unsupported.
