Windows 95 build 323 is a Japanese beta build of Windows 95. However, it is in English but with Japanese IME support and language pack installed. This build removed the Non-disclosure agreement from Setup included since build 73f.
New features[edit | edit source]
- This is the earliest available build to include "The Microsoft Network", along with a shortcut to it on the desktop.
- This is the earliest available build to include support in Setup for the licensing scheme (product keys, etc.) used in the RTM. Interestingly, the non-OEM product key is only seven digits long at this point in development, rather than the ten digits that would end up being used.
- The internal structure in
SUWIN.EXE
used for ProductType configuration has two extra elements: a far pointer to a function used to generate a product identification number, and a far pointer to a function used to check the product key.- There are four different functions pointed to for both of the function pointers: one set for retail non-upgrade (ProductType 1,3,4,5); one set for retail upgrade (ProductType 2,6); one set for OEM floppy (ProductType 7,8); one set for OEM CD (ProductType 9).
- Writing the entered name and organisation to the boot sector of disk 2 has not yet been implemented. Setting
setuppp.inf\data!TestPIDWrite
to 1 will show the error message for when that write fails. - The algorithm for the seven-digit key is the same as the last seven digits of the 10-digit key: all the digits added together most be divisible by 7.

Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]
The Nature, Musica, Robotz and Utopia sound schemes are missing.
Additional files[edit | edit source]
This build is not packed into CABs (although an oversized PRECOPY1.CAB
is present along with correctly sized MINI*.CAB
files), but is an extracted folder dump like in build 99 and prior. It appears to have been copied directly from a build system at Microsoft at the time, as additional files are present:
LAYOUT.CSV
is a comma-separated-value spreadsheet (including Microsoft Excel formulas) that presumably was used to generate LAYOUT.INF.- Descriptions for each file are included. Some of them are interesting, for example
WINMINE.EXE
has a description ofCool Mine Sweeper Game
.
- Descriptions for each file are included. Some of them are interesting, for example
- There are several variants of
SETUPPP.INF
:SETUPPP.FLP
(presumably for the floppy disk version of this build)SETUPPP.CD
(presumably for the CD version of this build)SETUPP.CDA
(same as previous but also including the "Microsoft Expo stub (CD only)").
