Windows 8 build 8040 (fbl_grfx_dev1) is a build of Windows 8, which was shared on 16 October 2024. Prior to its leak, a screenshot of this build was formerly available in this wiki, which was provided by an anonymous user one day after build 7746's leak. This is the last known build to ship in SKUs originating from Windows 7, as these became replaced by the all-purpose Prerelease SKU in later builds.

New features and changes[edit | edit source]
Setup[edit | edit source]
- The setup background has been changed from the one used in Windows 7 to a plain grayish blue color.
- The splash screen now shows a colored Windows logo instead of a white one. Additionally, a gradient has been introduced to the background, as opposed to it being single colored and the color has been changed from teal to blue.
- Descriptions are now more informal.
- The progress bar located at the top has been removed, but the stages can still be seen.
Recovery[edit | edit source]
- The Refresh your PC option was added under the name Rejuvenate your PC.
- When booting into an option, text is displayed underneath the spinner to indicate that the system is booting into a recovery option.
- This build introduces an early version of the "Recovery" screen.
Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]
- The leak warning in
winver
is colored black instead of the red that is seen in most builds. - Using the scroll wheel in the mouse in the Immersive Control Panel may lead to the area where the user is scrolling becoming white, with it going back to normal after the animation finishes. Using the scrollbar in the Immersive Control Panel prevents this bug from happening.
