Windows 2000 build 1671 is the official Beta 1 build of Windows 2000, released on 15 September 1997. This build introduces a new startup sound that was used until build 1911.

Changes[edit | edit source]

Setup now fully supports an upgrade from Windows 95 OSR2. The message that Windows 95 OSR2 has not been fully tested for an upgrade no longer appears when the user selects the upgrade option in setup when using Windows 95 OSR2.
This is the earliest available build with text-to-speech technologies being installed, in this case being "Microsoft Speech API 3.0" and the "Microsoft Text-to-Speech Engine (Technology Preview)". Microsoft Certificate Server is also installed by default.
The "Ports" Control Panel applet has been removed.

Installation notes[edit | edit source]

According to READ1ST.TXT on the installation media:

An upgrade from Windows NT 3.51 is not supported at this time.
The reparation of this build by using the Emergency Repair process is not supported.
Support for ISDN, WAN, multiple identical adapters and PC cards is limited.
The detection of early AMD PCnet adapters can cause the system to stop responding, and there is no workaround at this time.
The original Intel EtherExpress PRO/100 PCI adapter (E100A) is not supported. Only the E100B PCI models and later are supported.
Installing or upgrading to this build with a NE2000 or compatible network adapter set to an I/O address of 340 hex can cause the system to stop responding when booting into text-mode Setup. Removing the adapter or changing the I/O address can resolve this problem.
On an Alpha-based system, all 1.x versions of Digital FX!32 prevent the Windows NT Explorer from working properly.
It is recommended to disconnect the serial cable connecting an UPS before starting Setup, as Windows NT attempts to automatically detect devices connecting to serial ports, which can cause problems with UPS equipment.

In addition, upgrading from beta releases of Windows 98 is not supported.

Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]

This build can crash on most hypervisors. It is recommended to install this build on an emulator instead, such as PCem, 86Box, VARCem, QEMU or Bochs.
The S3 ViRGE/GX2 display adapter is supported in this build, but as the VGA drivers are installed instead, the display can only reach 800x600 as maximum screen resolution at 16 colors.
