Windows 11 build 25236.1000 is the thirtieth Insider Preview and the twenty-fourth available client build of Copper, the 23H1 development semester of Windows as a service. It was released to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel on 2 November 2022, along with its server counterpart. It is the last available client build to be based on the Copper codebase, as builds 25240+ switched to the Zinc codebase.

Shell[edit | edit source]

The tips on how to use Windows Search via the taskbar have been introduced to a subset of users in the English (United States) language.

Settings[edit | edit source]

  • If a UPS is connected, the battery graph under the Power & Battery page will be hidden.
  • The text on Accounts > Other users > Kiosk has been updated to inform users to set up a kiosk if needed.

Narrator[edit | edit source]

The ability to announce the pinned and unpinned status of apps in the taskbar has been added.

Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]

  • The EFI application variant of Boot Manager, bootmgfw.efi, was updated from build 25174 (unknown branch, signed on 30 July 2022) to build 25222 (unknown branch, signed on 8 October 2022), and contains code (unrelated to the EFI-to-boot-environment initialization code that is only present in EFI application variants of boot applications) that hasn't been pulled into rs_prerelease yet (not included in bootmgr.efi).
  • The statically-linked ReFS driver in bootmgr.efi was updated.

Fixed an issue that was causing the SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED bugcheck in certain cases.

Taskbar[edit | edit source]

  • Fixed an issue where opening the hidden icons flyout would cause a File Explorer entry for it to appear in the taskbar.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing the taskbar previews to freeze or show as blank and not open when pressing ⊞ Win+# to try and switch between windows.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing the show hidden icons flyout in the system tray to not responsively resize with changes with empty spaces and columns.
  • Fixed multiple issues related to the taskbar which were impacting explorer.exe reliability.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing the volume icon in the system tray to incorrectly show as muted.
  • Fixed a GDI handle leak related to updating the notification center icon in the taskbar, which would eventually lead to an explorer.exe crash for users who received a large number of notifications.

  • Fixed an issue that was causing File Explorer to crash when closing tabs.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing errant divider lines in the navigation pane.

Settings[edit | edit source]

  • Fixed an issue when going into the properties for an input device, the device would unexpectedly show in the output devices list under System > Sound.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing the inverted option under Accessibility > Color filters to work incorrectly and unexpectedly set the device to grayscale colors.

Fixed an issue that was causing natural voices to not speak in Narrator.

Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]

General[edit | edit source]

  • The audio may stop working in certain cases.
  • Several apps may crash on launch in certain cases.
  • Users may encounter a SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION bugcheck with win32kfull.sys when interacting with UI components in WinPE or WinRE.
  • Switching projection modes using ⊞ Win+P or the Project section of Quick Settings may not work properly.

Taskbar[edit | edit source]

  • The taskbar may sometimes flash when transitioning between desktop posture and tablet posture.
  • The taskbar may sometimes stay stuck in the expanded state instead of dismissing to collapsed state when using the bottom right edge gesture to see Quick Settings.
  • The notification badges may appear larger than normal in certain cases.

Shell[edit | edit source]

  • Various UI elements in apps may disappear and reappear repeatedly.
  • The text cursor may appear white on white when hovering over text fields.
  • Several apps, such as Microsoft Edge, may unexpectedly show thick lines on the side of the window.
  • Several Chat apps may not flash with new messages or open a preview on hover in the system tray.
  • The navigation headings of Start's all apps list may contain garbled text in the Simplified Chinese language.
  • On some locales, the default font used in several UI elements (such as the date and time on the taskbar) may change to regular Segoe UI instead of Segoe UI Variable.
  • On some locales, some strings may appear pseudo-localized.

Widgets[edit | edit source]

On right-to-left locales, the content may animate out of view before the Widgets board resizes when clicking to expanded view of the Widgets board.

Virtualization[edit | edit source]

  • Users may experience a UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR bugcheck when booting Windows in VMware on a Hyper-V enabled host with 2 or more cores allocated.
  • The system may fail to boot in VMware with attached network adapters.

Safe mode[edit | edit source]

  • Quick Settings and date/time clock on the taskbar may be missing due to the Capability Access Manager Service service not running.
  • Clicking Bluetooth & devices and Personalization pages may crash the Settings app due to an overrun of a stack-based buffer 0xc0000409.
