Windows 11 build 25188 is the twenty-first Insider Preview and the fifteenth available client build of Copper, the 23H1 development semester of Windows as a service. It was released to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel on 24 August 2022.

New features and changes[edit | edit source]

Settings[edit | edit source]

  • A link to advanced properties for any specified network has been added to the Wi-Fi and VPN properties pages.
  • The "Show the touch keyboard when there's no keyboard attached" checkbox under the Typing page has been replaced with a new dropdown menu with 3 available options ("Never", "When no keyboard attached" and "Always".)
    • This change is only available to a subset of users, but can be toggled on manually by enabling the 37007953 velocity ID.
  • The icons in the left navigation panel have been animated.
    • This change is disabled by default, but can be toggled on manually by enabling the 34878152 velocity ID.

File Explorer[edit | edit source]

  • The "Always show menus" option in the Folder Options has been removed.
  • When the tab title is too long to display completely in the available space, hovering the mouse over it will show a tooltip with the full name.

Shell[edit | edit source]

The Widgets entry point will collapse to a shorter width when the taskbar is center aligned and full.

Task Manager[edit | edit source]

  • The selection highlight color when selecting rows on the Details or Services page has been updated to be less bright and more aligned with the other colors used with the updated Task Manager design.
  • The positioning of the View button tooltip position has been updated to prevent the close button from blocking in the title bar.
  • The ability to generate a live kernel dump has been added with the "Create live kernel dump file" option in the right-click context menu under the Details page.
    • This feature is disabled by default, but can be enabled by running ViVeTool from an elevated Command Prompt window to enable the 40430431 velocity ID.
    • This feature is non-functional until build 25197.

Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]

  • From this build onwards, an ARMv8.1 or greater SoC is now required to boot, as the software workaround that allowed CPUs without FEAT_LSE (the ARM64 atomic instructions) to operate was removed.
  • Starting with this build, Windows Terminal has been set as the default terminal application of Windows, replacing legacy Windows Console host.

  • Fixed an issue leading to missing / broken characters on the Bitlocker screen when using the Japanese display language.
  • Fixed an issue where the Advanced Settings of an application pool on a remote IIS server would display a blank screen.
  • Fixed an issue where Steps Recorder wouldn't close when pressing Alt+F4.

  • Fixed an issue that was causing repeated explorer.exe crashes after attempting to access certain folders.
  • Fixed a recent issue that was causing unreadable text or wrong UI color if File Explorer was open when switching between light and dark mode.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing explorer.exe to crash when opening folders with certain images.
  • Fixed an issue that was the Up button next to the address bar to be misaligned with other buttons.
  • Fixed an issue which could lead to not being able to unpin Desktop, Pictures, or Documents folders from Quick access.
  • Fixed an issue which could lead to explorer.exe crashing when File Explorer launch was aborted, as well as when File Explorer was closed.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing the Delete key to unexpectedly not work on files in File Explorer sometimes.

  • Fixed an issue related to the taskbar overflow which was impacting explorer.exe reliability.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing Start menu's Recommended section to only show one column.
  • Fixed an issue for Narrator mistakenly reading out the search box in Start menu twice.
  • Fixed an issue where the access keys in ⊞ Win+X had duplicate definitions when an update was pending reboot.

  • Fixed an issue where in certain cases removing a printer from Settings wouldn't work.
  • Fixed an issue where the DNS suffix search list entry wasn't displaying correctly in Settings.
  • Fixed an issue where the buttons for changing current view under the Installed apps page might unexpectedly show arrows overlaid on top.

  • Fixed an underlying crash which could lead to search not launching.
  • Fixed an issue where searching for "detect displays" won't return Display Settings.

Fixed several emoji keywords based on feedback.

Task Manager[edit | edit source]

Fixed an issue that was causing the arrow shown when sorting processes by CPU should to appear black in certain cases.

Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]

General[edit | edit source]

  • The .NET Framework 3.5 feature may unable to enable with the 0x800f080c error, and may be disabled automatically when upgrading to this build.
  • Some games that use Easy Anti-Cheat may crash or cause the device to bugcheck.
  • The audio may stop working in certain cases.
  • Several apps may crash on launch in certain cases.
  • The OneDrive setup may appear to ask for permission to set up every time Windows reboots.
    • Disabling OneDriveSetup.exe from opening at startup may resolve this issue.

File Explorer[edit | edit source]

  • The color of the search box background may be the opposite color of the current color mode.
  • File Explorer may appear to open, close, and re-open before it finished drawing after being launched from certain places.

Virtualization[edit | edit source]

  • Users may experience a UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR bugcheck when booting Windows in VMware Workstation 16 on a Hyper-V enabled host with 2 or more cores allocated.
  • The system may fail to boot in VMware with attached network adapters.

Shell[edit | edit source]

  • The taskbar may not be able to display if File Explorer is maximized and the taskbar is set to auto-hide.
  • On some locales, the default font used in several UI elements (such as the date and time on the taskbar) may change to regular Segoe UI instead of Segoe UI Variable.

Widgets[edit | edit source]

  • The Notification badge number may appear misaligned on the taskbar.
  • The Notification banner for some badging may not appear in the Widgets board in some cases.

Print[edit | edit source]

The lines may not be included when printing tables from certain apps.

Safe mode[edit | edit source]

  • Quick Settings and date/time clock on the taskbar may be missing due to the Capability Access Manager Service service not running.
  • Clicking Bluetooth & devices and Personalization pages may crash the Settings app due to an overrun of a stack-based buffer 0xc0000409.
