Windows 11 build 23471 is an Insider Preview build of Nickel, the 22H2 development semester of Windows as a service. It was released to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel on 1 June 2023.
New features and changes[edit | edit source]
File Explorer[edit | edit source]
- A new Add Phone Photos button has been added to the command bar under the Gallery page, and clicking it will open a URL with a QR code for accessing photos from a mobile device. This button is available to users who opted in to the OneDrive Insider Program and only functional with an appropriate OneDrive sync client.
- The ability to tear out and merge File Explorer tabs has been rolled out to a subset of users. It can be toggled on manually by enabling the
39661369
(FETTOM
) velocity ID. - The Gallery page, previously available in build 23435, has been rolled out to all users.
- When hovering the mouse over a picture in the Gallery page, a tooltip will be shown with information about the picture.
- The background for thumbnails in the new Details pane has been made a little lighter in light mode.
Shell[edit | edit source]
The redesigned network flyout on the lock screen, initially implemented in build 25193, has been backported to this build.
Settings[edit | edit source]
- A new toggle has been added under Network & Internet > Cellular to control whether to use cellular when Wi-Fi is available but poor.
- A new "Let search apps show results" toggle has been added under Privacy & security > Search permissions. This feature is disabled by default, but can be toggled on manually by enabling the
40979072
velocity ID.
Narrator[edit | edit source]
Four Narrator natural voices in Spanish, Alvaro (Spain), Elvira (Spain), Jorge (Mexico) and Dalia (Mexico), have been added.
Bugfixes[edit | edit source]
File Explorer[edit | edit source]
- Fixed an issue where pressing ⇧ Shift+F10 wasn't opening the context menu.
- Fixed an issue where access keys appeared inconsistently if no button was pressed.
- Fixed an issue that was causing
explorer.exe
to crash when opening the context menu in Windows App SDK-based File Explorer. - Fixed an
explorer.exe
crash related to loading and interacting with the scrollbar in the Gallery page. - Fixed an issue where the Gallery page may require clicking twice on the node in the navigation pane for initial load.
- Fixed an issue where minimizing and reopening File Explorer would lose the scroll position in the Gallery page.
- Fixed an issue where some file types (e.g.,
.HEIC
) were not rendered correctly or performantly in the Gallery page. - Fixed an issue that was causing Narrator to not announce the file name when opening the new Details pane.
- Fixed an issue that was causing the new Details pane to not show file name extensions even if the "Hide extensions for known file types" option under Folder Options is unchecked.
Taskbar[edit | edit source]
- Fixed an issue that was causing the taskbar to get cut off when switching to and from the tablet-optimized taskbar.
- Fixed the issue that was causing an empty tooltip to be displayed momentarily in certain cases when hovering the search box and the search highlight gleam icon.
Narrator[edit | edit source]
Fixed an issue where Narrator with Braille support wasn't reading numbered lists correctly in Microsoft 365 apps.
Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]
General[edit | edit source]
- Additional filters beyond AV may be attached to the Dev Drive on a reboot.
- The performance of Dev Drive may vary between different devices.
- Backups of a device that was set up using a restore may not show up in subsequent restores.
File Explorer[edit | edit source]
- File Explorer may crash when dragging the scroll bar or attempting to close the window during an extended file-loading process.
- File Explorer may crash when clicking the ellipsis and chevron next to it in the address bar to open the flyout.
- This issue will only apply if the changes to the File Explorer (introduced in build 23466) are enabled.
- Users may experience thumbnail loading performance for dehydrated cloud files and memory usage in large collections if the Gallery page is enabled.
- The access keys in the XAML context menu may appear inconsistently if no button is pressed. Pressing a button will cause them to reappear.
- Clicking on the Share command may bring up the Windows share sheet (non-OneDrive) when the file recommendations feature is enabled.
Taskbar[edit | edit source]
- Narrator may not be able to navigate down the left side panel of the Search flyout.
- Text scaling may not work in the search flyout.
- When dragging and dropping a window in Task View to a different desktop, the icon for that app may not appear on the taskbar.
- Navigating the search flyout on the taskbar with the keyboard arrow keys may not work as expected.
Shell[edit | edit source]
The copy button for copying two-factor authentication codes in notification toasts may not work.
Safe mode[edit | edit source]
- Quick Settings and date/time clock on the taskbar may be missing due to the
Capability Access Manager Service

The Narrator natural voice (Spanish) selection dialog in the Settings app
