Windows 11 build 23440 is an Insider Preview build of Nickel, the 22H2 development semester of Windows as a service. It was released to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel on 19 April 2023, along with build 25346.
New features and changes[edit | edit source]
Shell[edit | edit source]
- The ability to hide the date and time in the system tray has been added, which is togglable via Time & language > Date & time in the Settings app. As part of this change, the notification badges will be shown permanently (show as "0" in grey color when no new notifications available).
- A new Diagnose network problems option has been added to the context menu on network icon in the system tray.
- The desktop icon for Windows Spotlight has been updated.
Widgets[edit | edit source]
The invocation logic has been updated to be less likely to accidentally open Widgets when brushing the mouse quickly across the Widgets entry point on the taskbar.
Bugfixes[edit | edit source]
File Explorer[edit | edit source]
- Fixed an issue where the context menu in Windows App SDK-based File Explorer was opening far away from where the mouse had right-clicked sometimes.
- Fixed an issue that was causing some of the icons in Windows App SDK-based File Explorer and the context menu to be blurry after DPI changes.
- Fixed an issue where the New button in the Windows App SDK-based File Explorer's command bar might not show anything in the dropdown.
- Fixed an issue where pressing Ctrl and then scroll the mouse wheel won't resize the thumbnails in the Gallery page.

- Fixed the issue where right-clicking a file or folder while pressing ⇧ Shift won't open the legacy context menu in certain cases.

crashes that were impacting taskbar reliability. - Fixed an issue where the cursor wasn't displaying correctly in the search box on the taskbar when using an Arabic display language.

Fixed an issue where the touch keyboard didn't correctly recognize a hardware keyboard was available in some cases.
Settings[edit | edit source]
- Fixed the issue that was causing the installation progress of language feature to be hidden under Time & language > Language & region.
- Fixed an issue that was causing the enhanced speech recognition support to not be installed correctly under Time & language > Language & region on ARM64 devices.
Task Manager[edit | edit source]
- Fixed the issue where double clicking the title bar won't maximize the window.
- Fixed a Task Manager crash which was impacting in the last couple Nickel builds.
Accessibility[edit | edit source]
- Some improvements has been made to how Narrator reads out the recommended files in File Explorer.
- Narrator can now clearly reading out the access keys after pressing ≣ Menu.
- Fixed an issue that was causing live captions to crash on first launch due to an issue impacting registry data retrieval.
- Fixed an issue that was causing live captions' Add a language menu icon and label to overlap.
- Fixed an issue that was leaving voice access's window empty after opening.
- Fixed an issue where voice access was crashing when using the command to go to the start of a document.
- Fixed an issue where Narrator's Ctrl+Narrator+Home and Ctrl+Narrator+End commands to move to the beginning and end of text weren't working correctly in Microsoft Edge.
Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]
File Explorer[edit | edit source]
- The access keys in the XAML context menu may appear inconsistently if no button is pressed. Pressing a button will cause them to reappear.
- Clicking on the Share command may bring up the Windows share sheet (non-OneDrive) when the file recommendations feature is enabled.
- The following issues will only apply if the Gallery page is enabled:
- The page may require clicking twice on the node in the navigation pane for initial load.
- Users may experience thumbnail loading performance for dehydrated cloud files and memory usage in large collections.
- Photos from OneDrive for Business currently must be hydrated to work properly.
- Some file types (e.g.,
.HEIC
) may not be rendered correctly or performantly.

Certain languages shown on the Language & Region page may indicate speech recognition support but don't yet have support for live captions.

Captioning performance may be degraded in non-English languages and missing out-of-language filtering in non-English (United States) languages.
Safe mode[edit | edit source]
- Quick Settings and date/time clock on the taskbar may be missing due to the
Capability Access Manager Service
service not running. - Clicking Bluetooth & devices and Personalization pages may crash the Settings app due to an overrun of a stack-based buffer
