Windows 10 build 18317 is the nineteenth Insider Preview build of Windows 10 May 2019 Update. This build was released to Windows Insiders in the Fast Ring on 16 January 2019.
New features and changes[edit | edit source]
- Separated Cortana and Search on the taskbar. By default on new installations, the two components are still joined together. To separate them, download mach2, type in
mach2 enable 17983783 -v 1
from an elevated Command Prompt, and then restart the machine or VM. - With some configurations of this build, the Start menu was separated into its own process called
StartMenuExperienceHost.exe
, but this file is not included on new installations of this build. - Fonts can now be dragged from File Explorer to the Fonts page in the Settings app to install them. Fonts can also be uninstalled from said Settings page. Drag and drop font installation is installed in a per-user basis, which does not require elevation. To install the desired font for all users, use the “Install for all Users” option on the selected font's right-click menu.
- Redesigned the Windows Insider Program page located in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Insider Program. The option to change the Insider ring you're on is located under “Pick your Insider settings”.
- Various bugfixes to the Windows Console.
- General changes, improvements, and bug fixes listed in the official release announcement.
Bugs[edit | edit source]
- The Windows Security app may show an unknown status for the Virus & threat protection area, and sometimes it may not refresh properly.
- Opening games that use anti-cheat software will trigger a green screen of death.
- Sometimes clicking your account in Cortana permissions won't bring up the UI to sign out from Cortana (if you were already signed in).
- Creative X-Fi sound cards do not function properly on this build.
- Some S-mode devices will attempt to update this build, it will download and restart, but the installation of this build will fail.
- Night light functionality does not work correctly due to a bug.
- When you open the Action Center, the quick actions have a chance of disappearing.
- Updating to this build may fail, but it will show up as a successful update in the Windows Update history page. If this happens, there will be more than one entries for the successful install for the same update in the history page.
- When using Reset this PC and Keep my files is selected on a device that has Reserved Storage enabled, the user will need to initiate an extra reboot to ensure Reserved Storage is properly working again.
- There was a bug impacting a small number of users that were enrolled in Microsoft Intune where they may not receive policies. Those policies are not applied and left in a “pending“ state on the server. The workaround is to go to Settings/Accounts/Access work or school and "Disconnect" the Azure AD account and then re-enroll.
- Some Realtek SD card readers do not function correctly with this build.
- The Update Orchestrator Service can crash periodically. When this happens, an error will occur in the Windows Update settings saying the update failed to restart. Restarting the PC via the power menu on the Start menu by choosing Update and restart should work, although there's a chance it won't.
- Closing and opening the lid of a laptop will cause the icons on the taskbar to be blank. To fix this, open Task Manager and then either restart
explorer.exe
or reboot. - If you download a theme from the Microsoft Store, it won't appear in Themes Settings.
