Ubuntu 4.10 (Warty Warthog) is the first release of Ubuntu, launched by Canonical Ltd. on 20 October 2004, over the choice of digital download or CDs mailed for free through Canonical's ShipIt program. Over the internet, 4.10 was distributed in two forms; an installer CD, similar to the setup discs of Windows and Mac, and a "live" CD based on Morphix which allowed users to test a clean installation from the disc itself without needing to install it first, though only for 32-bit x86. Installer CDs were provided for x86, PowerPC, and (relatively new for the time) x86-64.
Warty is the only desktop version of Ubuntu to exclusively use GNOME as its desktop environment, as newer releases introduced other default desktop environments in the form of "flavors" starting with Kubuntu in 5.04 (Hoary), which used KDE as its default. Unlike later releases, the application widget in GNOME 2's top panel is arranged differently and only features two dropdowns instead of three. It used kernel 2.6.8.
