Ubuntu 11.10 is a version of Ubuntu, which was released on 13 October 2011. This version completed the transition from GNOME 2 to Unity for the standard Ubuntu flavor, following Canonical's decision not to adopt the then-new GNOME 3 shell due to philosophical differences with the GNOME team. As such, it no longer includes the GNOME Panel as a fallback for systems that couldn't run the Unity environment.
