The Microsoft WinPad Preliminary Development Release is the earliest known build of WinPad. The PDK for this build was released in September 1993. It relies on Windows 3.1x, however, it needs to be run independently in the DOS environment. It was shared on BetaArchive on 8 June 2020.[1] This leak, however has the Disk 6 missing, and the complete copy of this build was uploaded on 24 June 2024.[2]
Notably, it already uses Chicago/Windows 95-style common controls instead of the ones seen in the Windows 3.xx line. As WinPad utilizes Standard Mode, the classic Windows environment cannot be used if Windows was already configured to use Standard Mode prior to installing WinPad (such as on 286 systems) unless WinPad is uninstalled.
