Clipboard Viewer is a utility that enables users in accessing the history of their copied or cut text within the clipboard, initially introduced in Windows 1.0. Furthermore, it enables the saving of clipboard contents and sharing with other users with the Windows NT version (known as ClipBook Viewer).

Original implementation (16-bit Windows and Windows 9x)[edit source]

Clipboard Viewer debuted in Windows 1.0 as a simple clipboard management program with basic functions including deleting and copying clipboard data.

ClipBook Viewer (Windows for Workgroups and Windows NT (prior to XP))[edit source]

A more advanced version, known as ClipBook Viewer, was released with Windows for Workgroups 3.1. It can view and manage clipboard contents, share them with other users, and save them to a .clp file. The clipboard contents can also be accessed in a variety of formats, including plain text, Unicode, HTML, RTF, and OLE private data.

Clipboard History (Windows 10 and later)[edit source]

14 years after the elimination of ClipBook Viewer from Windows Vista, a comparable feature called Clipboard History was introduced in build 17666. It retains the core functionality of the previous implementation; however, it can view more than one content in the clipboard (hence the name Clipboard History). Additionally, it is disabled by default and can only be turned on in Settings. Furthermore, it is incorporated into the user interface and can be activated by pressing ⊞ Win+V. The clipboard history is stored in %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Clipboard.
