iOS 8 (codenamed Okemo) is the eighth version of iOS that was released on 17 September 2014. It was first announced at the WWDC keynote on 2 June 2014.[1]

New features and changes[edit | edit source]

Continuity[edit | edit source]

Continuity has been added, which allows for cross-device communication features. Two of which include:

  • Handoff, which lets users start a task on one device and continue on another.
  • Phone call functionality for the iPad and Mac.

Notifications[edit | edit source]

  • Notifications can now be interacted with by swiping down on it.
  • The Today view in Notification Center can now be customized with Widgets.
  • The "Missed" view in Notification Center has been removed.

Keyboard[edit | edit source]

  • QuickType has been added, which displays word predictions.
  • Third-party keyboards can now be applied.

Family Sharing[edit | edit source]

Family Sharing has been added, which allows for purchases to be shared across different Apple IDs.

App Switcher[edit | edit source]

The App Switcher will now display contacts above the app cards. Tapping on one will provide messaging and calling links.

Camera and Photos[edit | edit source]

  • The Time-Lapse video mode has been added to more devices.
  • Panoramic photos can now be taken on the iPad.
  • Self-timers can now be set in the Camera app.
  • Advanced editing features have been added to the Photos app.
  • iCloud Photo Library has been added to the Photos app, which allows for photo synchronization between different devices.
  • Search in the Photos app has been enhanced.

Messages[edit | edit source]

  • Do Not Disturb has been added for group conversations.
  • Voice messages can now be sent.

Music[edit | edit source]

  • The Music app in iOS 8.4 includes the new Apple Music streaming service.
  • With the launch of Apple Music, the iTunes Radio service would be removed.

Passbook[edit | edit source]

The Passbook app now includes the Apple Pay services, which was added to the iPhone 6 series in iOS 8.1.

Notes[edit | edit source]

The Notes app received rich text editing support, which includes images support and the ability to bold, italicize, and underline text.

iCloud Drive[edit | edit source]

The iCloud Drive app has been added, which lets user browse their files stored in iCloud. The app can be enabled in the Settings app.

Safari[edit | edit source]

  • The Password Sharing feature has been added.
  • Safari now supports the WebGL graphics API.

App Store[edit | edit source]

  • The "Explore" tab has been added for providing improved app discovery.
  • The "Search" tab will now display trending searches.
  • App pages now support videos.

Apple Watch[edit | edit source]

iOS 8.2 would add support for the Apple Watch.

Health[edit | edit source]

The Health app has been added, which can be used for tracking fitness and body data from third-party apps.

Weather[edit | edit source]

Weather app data is now provided by The Weather Channel, rather than Yahoo.

Siri[edit | edit source]

Shazam integration has been added to Siri. Recognized songs will be listed in the iTunes Store app.

Phone[edit | edit source]

Wi-Fi calling is now available for phone calls.

Tips[edit | edit source]

The Tips app has been added, which displays information about iOS features on a weekly basis.
