Windows 8 build 8038 is a build of Windows 8. The original partner drop for both the retail and debug client releases of this build's unstaged ARMv7 installation media and Preinstallation Environment, including software development kits and raw symbol sets for Nvidia were uploaded on 12 September 2024 along with build 7968, 7969, 7996 (fbl_multimedia_media_sndproc) and 8020.
Booting this build on retail Surface RT hardware requires the same file replacements and patches (winload.efi
and acpi.sys
from build 8129, as well as the necessary sdbus.sys
patches) as build 8061.

New features and changes[edit | edit source]
Startup[edit | edit source]
- The loading animation has become larger and whiter on some occasions.
- The boot screen has been updated to feature a smaller loading spinner.
- The boot manager entry is now named "Windows Developer Preview" as opposed to "Windows 8".
Appearance[edit | edit source]
The wordoku wallpaper has been updated to feature a more purple-ish design and a set of colorful strands.
Redpill[edit | edit source]
MSHelp was renamed back to Windows Store. However, it is still not functional, and opening it results in a black screen.
Verbose boot removal[edit | edit source]
This build marks the removal of verbose boot, as appending the /sos
boot argument or enabling OS Boot Information in the System Configuration utility is no longer possible. If verbose boot is enabled, the OS will now just show the regular boot screen.
Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]
The system crash screen has been slightly modified to now show the description of the error instead of the error code.

Notes[edit | edit source]
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 The Starter edition (and its N counterpart), last included in Windows 7, had since been internally repurposed during Windows 8 development to act as a base for new and existing Windows client SKUs. The Web Server edition would also be identically repurposed during development of its server counterpart for both Desktop Experience and Core editions, although Standard Server would later take its place as the base for Server Core editions during the late development phases of Windows Server 2016, specifically during Redstone 1 development.
