New features and changes[edit | edit source]

Shell[edit | edit source]

Desktop UI[edit | edit source]

Minor changes have been introduced across the desktop user interface, particularly within the File Explorer desktop shell: the Computer shell folder was renamed to This PC, and storage devices containing hard disks, network drives and external storage devices have been combined into a single dedicated collapsible tab labeled Devices and drives. Libraries are no longer displayed by default in the File Explorer application, and dedicated shortcuts to the Desktop and Downloads folders have been added to the "This PC" folder.

Metro UI[edit | edit source]

Search[edit | edit source]

The Search charm has been updated to utilize its finalized design iteration. Search results now additionally display individual settings, and a back button has been implemented into the full-screen search user interface.

Settings[edit | edit source]

The temporary home page and the option to revert to the legacy Windows 8 settings user interface has been removed from the PC settings application.

Applications[edit | edit source]

This build introduces a substantial number of underlying user interface changes across the existing subset of built-in Metro applications.

The internal AppX package name for the Alarms application has been changed from Microsoft.Alarms_8wekyb3d8bbwe to Microsoft.WindowsAlarms_8wekyb3d8bbwe. A set of ten new alarm sounds have been added, and it is now possible to preview alarm sounds; in addition, list designs within the Alarms application have been updated to properly reflect the Metro design language guidelines. The "New alarm" heading is no longer present when creating an alarm, and the set time found within the middle of the alarm now uses the Segoe UI Semilight font in place of its bold counterpart. Timer animations now transition smoothly, and detailed information (such as elapsed post-countdown time) is now provided within notification toasts. The restart timer/stopwatch button design has been slightly altered to include a positioning fix in the arrow graphic.

The user interface for the Sound Recorder application has been completely overhauled to feature a simplified dark orange design that includes a record button in the center of the user's screen. Saved recordings are now displayed on the right-hand side of the user's screen (left if the user is using a right-to-left language). Ease-in/out animations are now present within the Sound Recorder's user interface, and minor iconography changes towards certain buttons have been added to the application.

The Photos application's image editing functionality has been updated to support low- and high-resolution image proxying and patching (respectively), and image cropping (along with the rule of thirds image composition guideline) has been added. Buttons for zooming in and out of an image have been implemented, and minor animation splining adjustments are now present across the user interface. A code refactor has taken place within the host application for the File Picker and Photos applications; a new common Brushes.xbf binary has been added, and the StandardStyles.xbf binary has been moved from the Common directory to the main Styles directory of the main FileManager application.

The Movie Moments application has been slightly updated: the disclosure warning is no longer present and now includes the application's title, and the Styles button now functions properly, offering three distinct title/caption styles for comments made throughout the video editing process. The Share button's iconography has been additionally updated.

New tile designs for the Calculator, Alarms and Sound Recorder applications have been additionally been added.

Bugfixes[edit | edit source]

  • Windows Runtime applications no longer exhibit graphical artifacting, regardless of the installed graphics driver.
  • Desktop Window Manager fade transitions now function properly.

Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]

Interface[edit | edit source]

Localization[edit | edit source]

  • Specific parts of the user interface (such as File Explorer strings, Metro applications and portions related to setup) are not localized and therefore use their English (United States) string resource counterparts.

Applications[edit | edit source]

  • Right-to-left orientation support in the reworked PC settings application is not complete and displays UI elements left-to-right despite proper localization being present.
  • The Xbox Music media player application fails to start properly on this build.
  • Certain Win32 applications such as Paint may not redraw themselves correctly.

Desktop Window Manager[edit | edit source]

  • DWM animation transitions (such as invoking the Charms bar) do not work properly.
