Windows 2000 build 1738 is a Beta 1 build of Windows 2000. It was found on the warez compilation CD "Shutdown #3", which was uploaded onto the Internet Archive on 9 July 2021.[1] It is the first known Windows NT build to include Advanced Startup Options and Safe mode, and the last build to have the "Safe to shutdown" dialog box.

Changes[edit | edit source]

  • This build no longer requires the user to press Ctrl+Alt+Del to log into Windows. This only affects the Workstation SKU, as the requirement is still available today in the Server SKU.
  • The copyright date in Command Prompt has been updated from 1985–1997 to 1985–1998.
  • There is a new option in the list of installed programs, called "Windows NT Optional Components", though it is broken and will crash upon launch.

Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]

Installation[edit | edit source]

Booting from the CD results in a quick crash.

Sounds[edit | edit source]

Clicking on "Browse..." two times in the Sounds Control Panel applet causes it to crash.

Safe mode[edit | edit source]

The "Minimal Services Boot with Command Prompt" option is the same as "Minimal Services Boot", as it will load Windows NT in safe mode, but with the Windows Explorer shell instead of the Command Prompt.
