Windows 11 build 23601 is an Insider Preview build of Nickel, the 22H2 development semester of Windows as a service. It was released to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel on 7 December 2023.

New features and changes[edit | edit source]

Windows 365[edit | edit source]

  • A personal mode for Windows 365 Boot, along with support of fast account switching, have been implemented.
  • Support of company logo and name customization on the login screen for Windows 365 Boot has been implemented.
  • A new fail fast mechanism for Windows 365 Boot has been implemented to informs users to resolve network issues or complete app setup during the login screen.
  • Support of disconnecting from Cloud PC directly from local devices via Task view has been implemented. As part of this change, tooltips on disconnect and sign-out options have been added in the Cloud PC's Start menu.
  • The term "Cloud PC" and "Local PC" on the desktop indicator will be shown when switching between respective devices.
  • The Cloud PC connection status and the connection timeout indicator will be shown while waiting on the connection screen.

Copilot[edit | edit source]

  • The ability to undock Copilot by clicking the new icon at the top right in the header has been implemented.
  • Copilot will no longer rearrange or push the desktop icons when launched.

Shell[edit | edit source]

  • The Cast flyout in Quick Settings has been updated to show link for troubleshooting device discovery and other casting issues.
  • Swiping from the right edge of the desktop on a touch display will open Copilot instead of notifications.
  • The ability to share to or install WhatsApp directly from Share flyout has been implemented.

Settings[edit | edit source]

A new "Open local PC settings" button has been added under the System page while in Windows 365 Boot.

Accessibility[edit | edit source]

The ability to use voice access to open applications, dictate text and interact with elements on the screen has been implemented.

Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]

Windows Speech Recognition is deprecated and will pop up a notification dialog when opening it and display a notification banner under Accessibility > Speech in the Settings app.

Bugfixes[edit | edit source]

  • Fixed an issue that was causing full screen apps to minimize on secondary monitors when launching Copilot.
  • Fixed an issue impacting explorer.exe reliability.
  • Fixed an issue where uncombined taskbar icons were cutting off the title instead of adjusting with the title length.
  • Fixed an issue where when creating a dump file for a process in Task Manager, the dump file location wouldn't selectable.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing the Settings app to crash when navigating to System > Nearby sharing.

Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]

Copilot[edit | edit source]

When first launching or after refreshing Copilot while using Voice access, users may need to use "Show grid" commands to click in the "Ask me anything" box for the first time.

Input[edit | edit source]

Using pen input may lead tabtip.exe to crash sometimes.

Widgets[edit | edit source]

  • Users may experience a loading delay when the Microsoft Start feed is re-enabled.
  • Announcements from the Microsoft Start feed may still shown on the taskbar after the feed is hidden.
  • Keyboard navigation from the settings subpage back to the top-level settings page may be broken.
  • Incorrect spacing and fonts may exist in some settings pages.

Safe mode[edit | edit source]

  • Quick Settings and date/time clock on the taskbar may be missing due to the Capability Access Manager Service service not running.
  • Clicking Bluetooth & devices and Personalization pages may crash the Settings app due to an overrun of a stack-based buffer 0xc0000409.
