Windows 10 build 20221 is the fourteenth Insider Preview build of Iron, the 21H1 development semester of Windows as a service. This build was released to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel on 23 September 2020.
New features and changes[edit | edit source]
These features were only available to a small group of Insiders at first, meaning that not everyone was seeing them right out of the box. As of build 20231.1000, they are available for all Dev Insiders.
- The "Meet Now" Skype feature now contains integration to the Windows taskbar. It is a flyout present on the system tray that contains links to easily create or join Skype meetings without needing to sign-in or download anything. When any of the links is clicked, the Skype webpage or UWP app (if installed) opens on the respective screen.
- Due to its gradual rollout, it is disabled by default on clean installations. To enable it, use Vibranium Velocity (ViVeTool), then type in the command
ViVeTool.exe addconfig 28170999 2
in an elevated Command Prompt window and restart. - This feature is not available on Azure Active Directory (AAD) user accounts or Enterprise SKUs. However, the block was removed on Cobalt build 21277.
- Due to its gradual rollout, it is disabled by default on clean installations. To enable it, use Vibranium Velocity (ViVeTool), then type in the command
- When Windows Insiders upgraded to this build, the People app no longer appeared as a standalone app in the Start menu, and as a result, it was only accessible from the Mail and Calendar apps.
Bugs[edit | edit source]

- Live preview doesn't work for pinned site tabs.
- Some Office applications may either crash or go missing if you update to this build.
- There's a chance of the Settings app crashing if you open Manage Disks and Volumes.
- There's a chance of randomly encountering a BSOD with the error code
KMODE_EXCEPTION
when using certain virtualization technologies. - Sometimes, when starting up a WSL2 distro, there's a chance of randomly encountering the error “The remote procedure call failed”.
- The vEthernet adapter used in WSL2 distros can randomly disconnect itself after a certain period of time.
- When some Insiders updated to this build, they encountered a Compatibility Assistant notification that said “Microsoft Office is no longer available”. Despite the warning, the installed apps from the suite were still available and functional.
- Clean installations for this build still contain the People app on the Start menu.
