Windows 10 build 17661.1001 is the tenth Insider Preview build of Windows 10 October 2018 Update. This build was released to Windows Insiders in the Fast Ring on 3 May 2018.

New features and changes[edit | edit source]

Screen Sketch, previously part of the Windows Ink Workspace, is now an individual app, and as such has a variety of improvements, such as the ability to update it via the Microsoft Store, showing up on the Alt+Tab ↹, the ability to resize the windows and the ability to open multiple sessions of this app, and also including support for Sets.
Pressing ⊞ Win+⇧ Shift+S now brings up a snipping toolbar with four options, these are to make a rectangular selection, a freeform one, take a full-screen screenshot and to close it. As soon as you make a snip, a notification will appear that will take you to the Screen Sketch app when interacted with.
If a pen is present, you can choose to launch the screen snipping tool via a single tap.
You can make the PrtScn key launch the screen snipping tool.
A new quick action is present to open Screen Sketch.
Introduced acrylic, which is part of Fluent Design in the Task View.
Renamed Windows Defender Security Center to "Windows Security".
Focus assist will turn on automatically when a full-screen game is being played.
The sound device settings was integrated into the Settings app. On this page, you can choose the name of the device and select a preferred spatial audio format.
Updated the logo for the Microsoft Pinyin IME, as well as introduced a new IME toolbar. Dark theme support was also added to the IME as well.
Added some new options to the IME mode indicator context menu on the taskbar.
The IME now uses the same user interface for Expressive Input as other languages. It can be brought up by click the emoji button in the IME toolbar, or by using the keyboard shortcuts for the emoji panel, ⊞ Win+. or ⊞ Win+;. You can also browse between Emoji, Kaomoji and symbol input if Simplified Chinese is the active locale.
You can now rotate HEIF-format images in File Explorer, as well as edit the metadata for the selected image.
This build is the first to include the Your Phone app.
Extended the timebomb to 14 December 2018.
The Lean (CloudE) SKU, an early iteration of the S Mode was removed, however the SKU's packages were still avaliable in UUP, until the build Windows 10 build 18936.

General[edit | edit source]

Certain notifications from Action Center may cause Explorer.exe to crash.
VPNs may stop working after upgrading to this build. To get them to work again, delete the %ProgramData%\Microsoft\Network\Connections\pbk* folders.
After updating to this build and installing the latest app updates from the Microsoft Store, If there are any additional user accounts on the PC, and you log in to them, some apps may be missing. To fix this issue, run the following command in PowerShell: Get-AppXPackage *WindowsStore* -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml
You may get to see the desktop before you get to the lock screen upon resuming from stand-by.
The Movies & TV app can crash if the user denies access to their video library and then navigates to the Personal tab.
Narrator can read extra text when Alt+Tab ↹ is invoked.
If you finish the setup for a Windows Mixed Reality headset on this build, the headset will remain black until you unplug and reconnect it to the PC.
Sometimes the update process appears to get stuck at percentages between 80% to 100% for a prolonged period of time.

Sets & Office[edit | edit source]

The top of some Win32 desktop apps may appear slightly underneath the tab bar when they're opened maximized. To fix this issue, restore and re-maximize the affected window.
Sometimes closing one tab can minimize the entire set.
Tiling and cascading windows do not work for inactive tabs.
Opening an Office document while the same app has an existing document open may cause an unintended switch to the last active document. It can also happen if you close a sheet in Excel while other sheets are open.
Right-clicking a tab on Sets does not bring up a context menu in this build.
Locally stored files and cloud files that are on non-Microsoft cloud services are not automatically restored.
