Visual Studio .NET (codenamed Rainier) is the third major version of Visual Studio, released on 13 February 2002 alongside .NET Framework 1.0. It rewrote all languages, and the development environment, to take advantage of the .NET Framework. It also introduced the C# programming language, along with Managed C++, Visual Basic .NET, and Visual J#.

Early in development, Visual Studio .NET was known as Visual Studio 7.0, since that is its internal version number. This version of Visual Studio comes bundled by default with Microsoft Visual C++ version 13.0x.

This release drops support for Windows 9x operating systems.

Main changes[edit | edit source]

The main interface uses the name "Microsoft Development Environment", which was used until Visual Studio 2005. The main process is now devenv.exe, which was previously used by Visual InterDev. Also, to focus on .NET development, and to differentiate this version with the previous one, all languages have a .NET moniker, which would be removed in Visual Studio 2005.
