Unity (not to be confused with the game engine under the same name) is a desktop environment created and formerly maintained by Canonical Ltd. It is a GNOME graphical shell for Ubuntu and was created to make more efficient use of the limited screen space provided in Netbooks. Although now discontinued on 5 April 2017, it is still being maintained by it's community. A continuation of it was confirmed called UnityX.
