Windows Longhorn build 4042 (Lab06 n): Difference between revisions

Most of this page has been rewritten in a better English and tidied up (especially the parts regarding the new UI have been merged together), no important infos have been removed. Added infos regarding DWM (I used the term DWM as sbctl.exe in this build is called "DWM Control Utility"), and Sticky Notes. I have removed the useless "Slate" (we have a dedicated page for that, infos about Slate will be moved there) and "Sidebar" paragraphs as well.
(Added info about earlier Slate theme.)

*The boot screen/safe to shutdown screen has been updated and now uses the older, colored Windows logo used in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. It also uses the Segoe UI font, meaning this build is the first one to ever use the font (although Milestone 5 and 6 wallpapers used this font previously). The white Windows logo is still used on the Start button when the sidebar is disabled, and on the <code>winver</code> and "About Program" dialogs.
*The boot screen bitmap has been updated: apart from using again the same, colored Windows logo found in Windows XP, it also uses the Segoe UI font (previously used in the default wallpapers of milestone 5 and 6 builds).
*The alternative <code>AUTOCHK</code> boot screen now has a color scheme of black and grey, with little shades of blue, replacing the previous color scheme which was in use since Windows XP build 2469. Also, the Windows logo at the top has been removed.

*The whole user interface has been revamped: the welcome screen sports a new background with a gray-blue gradient and has been generally updated to fit the new Slate theme, which replaced Plex in the role of placeholder for the back then heavily secured Aero theme. Some parts of the UI still show traces of the older Plex theme though, as it can be seen in the Windows setup itself, the bitmap of the "About Windows" dialog box, the "Longhorn Screen Saver" or the Aero wizards. Disabling the Sidebar will also make the Start button show the older white Windows logo, in addition to bringing back the "start" text.
*The default wallpaper has been changed to a new one reminiscent of the one found in build 3683.
*Each user's desktop wallpaper will also be applied to the lock screen for that account.
*Each user's desktop wallpaper will also be applied to the lock screen for that account.
*The Pig Latin version name has been changed to "Longhorn Professional".
*The product name string in the build tag does not use Pig Latin anymore, thus showing "Longhorn Professional".
*Many parts of the user interface have been heavily revamped for a cleaner UI.
*Several sidebar tiles have been removed in this build, and as a result of that only the Classic Tray, Clock, People, Quick Launch, Slide Show and Sync tiles are available.
*The login screen has been modified to fit the Slate theme, with a gray-bluish background.
*In the Start menu, some folder locations have had the 'My' dropped from their names, although not all; the 'My Documents' folder goes to the traditional shell location, whereas the 'Documents' folder goes to the library system similar to that found in Windows 7.

*This is the first available build to contain the Online Photo Print wizard.
*The "Carousel", "Panorama" and "3D View" view modes found in earlier builds have been removed from Windows Explorer.
*The "3D View" option in Explorer (and thus the Panorama and Carousel view styles) are no longer accessible. Many sidebar tiles present in Milestone 3-6 builds have also been removed.
*DWM is present in this build and can be initialized by running <code>\WINDOWS\I386\sbctl.exe start</code>. Running <code>\WINDOWS\I386\sbctl.exe stop</code> will stop DWM. It is worthy noticing that DWM tends to be unstable and hang after some time, resulting in a crash of the Theme and Desktop Manager service, which can be restarted by running <code>net start winux</code>.
*This build contains a new app called "StickyNotes". This application is hidden at the <code>\Windows\WinSxS</code> folder. Unlike in build 4074, Stickies work by simply dragging an empty text file onto the StickyNote icon.
*A "Sticky Notes" application can be found in the <code>\WINDOWS\WinSxS</code> folder. Dragging an empty text file onto <code>StickyNote.exe</code> will launch the application. Sticky notes support either typing or handwriting, resizing and colorization. The "Options" menu option appears to be grayed out, and the audio controls don't seem to work. If you create more than one sticky note, you will notice that there will be a single taskbar button for all of them.
*A background reminiscent from the one used in build 3683 was added.
*A new Order prints online wizard is accessible by clicking the homonymous task found in Windows Explorer folders such as "My Pictures" or in the "Photos and Videos" library.
*This is the final build of Longhorn to have the Plex style setup.

Slate
This build marks the debut of the new Slate theme, which was first seen publicly in the various 4050 builds during the PDC 2003 conference, and the official PDC build, build 4051. It features a gray theming (as opposed to Plex's blue). By digging into the resources of its visual style file, specifically in the BLOB (STREAM in later builds) folder, it is possible to find bits of an earlier Slate theme, including resources for the Taskbar, the Sidebar and the Sidebar clock, probably fitting builds in the M5 range, thus demonstrating that this theme has been in development much earlier that it is commonly thought, and thus kept away from regular Lab06 builds .

Sidebar
To coincide with the major facelifts made towards the user interface, the sidebar and its existing tiles have also seen a number of design updates.
