Linux for PlayStation 2 (also referred to as PS2 Linux) is a custom Linux distribution produced by Sony Computer Entertainment that ports the Linux kernel and a subset of user packages to the PlayStation 2 video game console, converting it into a fully-fledged personal computer. An official fork of PS2 Linux was created for the Japan-exclusive PlayStation Broadband Navigator (PSBBN), a replacement for the console's system firmware featuring an online marketplace, a built-in web browser as well as expanded multimedia functionality.
The operating system only works on the original "fat" PlayStation 2 models that either feature a PCMCIA card slot (for SCPH-100xx series models to the SCPH-18000 model released in Japan during 2000 prior to the release of the system in other regions) or a dedicated Expansion Bay (from the SCPH-3xxxx-series first released in October 2000 to the SCPH-500xx-series console models first released in May 2003), as it requires a physical hard drive (external for the models that feature a PCMCIA slot, internal for the models that feature the Expansion Bay) to function properly.
PS2 Linux was succeeded by the OtherOS feature included as part of the PlayStation 3 system software, before its removal in firmware version 3.21.
