MS-DOS 6.00 build 0015 is an early build of MS-DOS 6.00. The first two disks of this build were uploaded to a BBS on 9 August 1992, with the other two being uploaded on 11 August. The bootable demo disk of this build was uploaded to a BBS on 24 September.

The system at this stage is seriously reworked in comparison with MS-DOS 5. Many new built-in system utilities appeared. The size of the distribution has grown more than 2 times.

New features and changes[edit | edit source]

  • This build includes a beta release of DoubleDisk 3.0 by VertiSoft, which is set up by launching the MDSETUP.BAT batch file. DoubleDisk was later used as a foundation for DoubleSpace.
  • Microsoft Diagnostics (MSD.EXE) has been added.
  • New boot sector with identifier (MSDOS_6.0)
  • The list of Setup launch parameters has been expanded.
  • Setup has been significantly redesigned. The interface is closer to Windows 3.1 Setup.
  • The text warning about the release expiration, which was removed from MS-DOS 5.00 RC3a, has reappeared. It does not limit functionality.
  • MS-DOS Shell copyright updated to 1992.
  • An interactive help system has been introduced (HELP.EXE)
  • The text help system has been renamed to (DOSHELP.EXS)
  • QBasic has been updated to version 1.1.
  • MS-DOS Editor has been updated to version 1.1.
  • The distribution includes the Microsoft Anti-Virus antivirus application, which has a graphical interface.
  • DOS Backup utility introduced.
  • The MS-DOS Defragmenter utility has been introduced.
  • The distribution includes the Microsoft Interlnk Server Version 1.00 application for network data transfer.

Findings[edit | edit source]

  • Towards the end of setup, a "More to come..." placeholder text appears in the billboards.
  • The setup billboard text mentions both clean and interactive boot options, but they weren't implemented until the next build.
