Creating Update Diskettes[edit | edit source]

IBM provides two EXE files: DOS700A1.EXE and DOS700A2.EXE. Users must run these two EXE files separately and create update disk 1 and 2 respectively after passing the genuine verification. The following takes creating DISK 1 as an example to explain the steps (the steps required to create DISK2 are exactly the same):

  • Run the following command in Japanese mode DOS: DOS700A1.EXE X:, where X: refers to FDD letter (A: or B:).
  • After the program is run, some Japanese information will appear on the screen, telling the user that in order to create an update disk, they must first verify that they have one of the following three items:
    • License Certificate for PC DOS J7.00/V, or
    • Genuine floppy disk 1 of PC DOS J7.00/V, or
    • PC DOS J7.00/V CD-ROM
  • Prepare any one of the three items, then press Y and Enter to proceed to the next step. The program then gives user some legal warnings, also enter Y and press Enter.
  • The program now asks user to enter the certificate number on the License (which is located in the lower right corner) and press Enter, or, if user decides to use DOS disk 1 or CD-ROM for verification, just press Enter without entering anything.
    • If user chooses to enter the certificate number, when the number is correct, the program will continue and ask to insert a blank floppy for writing.
    • If user chooses to insert floppy disk or CD for verification, after pressing Enter, the program will further ask the user whether it was a floppy disk or a CD that was just inserted. If it was a floppy disk, enter Y and press Enter twice; if it was a CD, enter N and press Enter twice.
  • If the verification process fails, the program will report an error and exit; if the verification is successful, the program will ask user to insert a formatted blank floppy disk into floppy drive. After inserting, press Enter, the program will warn the user that any content on the floppy disk will be overwritten. Press Y and Enter, program will start writing disk.
  • After the floppy disk is written, press Enter to exit.

Applying Update[edit | edit source]

  • Restart and boot PC from DISK 1 just created. After booting, Press Enter to select the only option that appears on the screen (roughly speaking: Update the already installed DOS system).
  • The update program will ask the user for the system file path of the installed DOS system. The default path is C:\DOS. Enter the correct path and press Enter.
  • The update program will ask the user for the Japanese fonts and dictionary file path of the installed DOS system. The default path is C:\. Enter the correct path and press Enter.
  • The program will start to update DOS. The screen will display the updated files and update results. During the update process, the user will be asked to insert DISK 2. After the update is complete, press Enter, then press F3 to exit the update program.
  • Finally, update program will ask user to reinsert DISK1 and press Enter. After the operation, remove the floppy disk and reboot the system.
