HarmonyOS NEXT is a unified close-sourced OS distro of OpenHarmony, announced at HDC 2023 on 4 August 2023, which is the first version of HarmonyOS to use the HongMeng Microkernel[1] and first version to remove support for Android Apps. HarmonyOS NEXT was released to public beta testers on 8 October 2024 for Mate 60 (Barry) and Mate 60 Pro series (Allen), Mate X5 (Alta) and MatePad Pro 13.2 (Poincare), and then released to public beta testers on 22 October 2024 for Pura 70 (Audrey) and Pura 70 Pro series (Hepburn), Pocket 2 (Lembongan) and MatePad Pro 11 2024 (Xiaoyao). With the release of Mate 70 series (Celestial Pillar), Mate X6 (Iceland) and MatePad Pro 13.2 2025, users can choose OSes between HarmonyOS 4.3 and HarmonyOS NEXT, and both Mate 70 Pro and Mate X6 have a special SKU that preinstalled with HarmonyOS NEXT (known as HarmonyOS NEXT Pioneer Edition). Starting with 2025, all Huawei smartphones will be preinstalled with HarmonyOS NEXT only.
