Mac OS X Server 1.x is an operating system developed by Apple released on 16 March 1999. This operating system marks a major transition for Mac OS, running on NeXTSTEP's UNIX-based technology following Apple's purchase of NeXT shortly after the failure of the Copland project. It is the commercial release of the Rhapsody project, which was previously met with negative reactions by software vendors regarding its intention to run all existing classic Mac OS code in a virtual machine, requiring a complete rewrite of applications in order to run natively. Following the poor reception of the Rhapsody project, Apple would announce changing Rhapsody into a server operating system, while Apple worked on a separate API called Carbon to provide backwards compatibility to classic Mac OS applications without a virtual machine.
It is the successor to Mac OS 9 after the end of the Classic environment, and was replaced by Mac OS X Public Beta and Mac OS X Server 10.0. Support for this operating system ended on 24 March 2001.
