This is the Windows NT 4.0 WorkStation Release Candidate that I SHOULD
have gotten right the first time. I do take responsibility for the
error so don't blame Raptor - he had NOTHING to do with it. The earlier
9 disks were not a fake - just incomplete. This one is the whole
enchillada!
There is no password protection, no key, nothing. Just unarj, change
directory to i386 and run winnt.exe. You will be prompted to make
the boot disk. Just follow instructions and all should work. If it
does not - please e-mail me immediately so I can change my name and
leave the country. Do not think I would be forgiven for a 2nd major
goof.

Windows NT v4.0 Workstation Release Candidate #1 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Windows NT 4.0 Release Candidate #1 is pretty much the final packaging of the newest version of Windows NT, although a few minor tweaks may be made to the packaging that goes to the shelves. Windows NT 4.0 takes the rock solid stability of Windows NT and marries it with the usable user interface of Windows 95, providing a stable platform for running 32-bit Windows applications in a truely 32-bit environment - it has none of the 16-bit components that Windows 95 uses. Windows NT 4.0 features robust networking capabilities, and the server variant of it nearly matches the performance of a dedicated NetWare server. Windows NT is scalable, and can support up to 16 processors working together to improve performance. NT will run 16-bit Windows and DOS applications in emulation mode, which is a bit slower than Windows 95 will run them, but is much better at protecting against system crashes. To install, unzip all zips to an install directory, then "arj x ntw4rc1 -v -y". Run "WINNT" to install from DOS or Win95, or "WINNT32" from a previous version of Windows NT. Using the "/b" switch will skip floppy disk setup. This pre-release of Windows NT has been brought to you by The Lexicon, still a bastion of high quality in Southern California. Branding wallpapers[edit | edit source]
The Server edition of this build uses the lanmannt and lanma256 backgrounds from the RTM, but the Workstation edition uses a slightly different one:
- A small "Version: 4.0" text is in place of "4.0" next to "Workstation"
- The Windows logo has a trademark symbol (™) along with a drop shadow in addition to a glow effect. Only the latter is present in the final version.
- The text "with Microsoft Internet Explorer" beneath "Workstation" is absent.
- The registered trademark symbol (®) next to the Microsoft logo is barely visible compared to the final version.
- Copyright notices are written in Arial font instead of Franklin Gothic.
- Colors (particularly the Windows logo and upper part of the background) are slightly darker.
Further changes[edit | edit source]
- This is the first build where
AUTORUN.EXElaunches when the installation disc is inserted. It is similar to what seen in Windows 95. However, "Hover!" and other extras are not included. - This build identifies itself as "RC 1.3".
- The colors used for the end-user license agreement have been inverted, with blue being used for the background and gray for the text.
- New message entries were added to the bugcheck message table for the boot screen to correct a grammatical error for multiprocessor systems and to add an RC tag for beta Service Pack releases:[1]
0x4000009D(WINDOWS_NT_INFO_STRING_PLURAL) is a copy of the0x40000088(WINDOWS_NT_INFO_STRING) message, with the only difference being changing the "System Processor" text to "System Processors". This string is normally used only if a multiprocessor HAL has been installed.0x4000009E(WINDOWS_NT_RC_STRING) is the "RC" string that displays if a prerelease version of a Service Pack has been installed.
