Windows 10 build 17686 is the fifteenth Insider Preview build of Windows 10 October 2018 Update. This build was released to Windows Insiders in the Fast Ring on 6 June 2018.

New features and changes[edit | edit source]

General[edit | edit source]

  • Added a new region page to the Settings app. This page allows the user to easily override the default regional format settings such as the calendar, the first day of the week, dates, times and currency.
  • Added a way to easily download Local Experience Packs from the Settings app.
  • A toast notification now appears if the microphone has been disabled in the privacy settings.
  • Improvements were made to File Explorer's and the Common File Dialog (open and save dialogs) dark theme.
  • Surface Studio devices can't upgrade to this build because of an error saying "Your PC hardware is not supported on this version of Windows 10".

Mixed Reality[edit | edit source]

  • A physical monitor is no longer required to be connected while running Mixed Reality (although a monitor is still required to set up and sign in to Mixed Reality), but auto login can be configured so the user does not have to sign-in manually.
  • Mixed Reality now supports the Camera Capture UI API to take pictures of the mixed reality world by using the system capture experience.
  • Made it easier to stop Mixed Reality videos from the Start menu.

Bugs[edit | edit source]

General[edit | edit source]

  • After updating to this build, Mixed Reality Portal will reinstall the Mixed Reality Software, and as a result, the environment setting is not preserved.
  • There may be random reliability and performance issues when the Start menu is launched.
  • Fonts that were downloaded from the Microsoft Store may not work in some apps.
  • The acrylic background on the taskbar flyouts (network, volume, etc) is missing.
  • When executing HLK Component and Device driver tests, there's a chance of a system crash that blocks test execution.

Sets & Office[edit | edit source]

  • The top of some Win32 desktop apps may appear slightly underneath the tab bar when they're opened maximized. To fix this issue, restore and re-maximize the affected window.
  • Sometimes closing one tab can minimize the entire set.
  • Tiling and cascading windows do not work for inactive tabs.
  • Opening an Office document while the same app has an existing document open may cause an unintended switch to the last active document. It can also happen if you close a sheet in Excel while other sheets are open.
  • Locally stored files and cloud files that are on non-Microsoft cloud services are not automatically restored.
