Windows 10 build 17682 (rs_prerelease) is the fourteenth Insider Preview build of Windows 10 October 2018 Update. This build was released to Windows Insiders in the Fast Ring on 31 May 2018.
New features and changes[edit | edit source]
- Updated the new tab page's design (only available at the timeframe of this build) to make the apps more visible. Apps are now included in the frequently used list, and the all apps list was integrated to the page so the user can browse the list of apps rather than having to use the search box. Apps that support Sets will launch into a tab when clicked from this page.
- If the PC is being wirelessly projected, a banner now appears at the top of the screen. This feature allows the user to keep track of the state of the connection, allows them to disconnect or reconnect to another system, and as well as tuning the connection. This configuration is done via the settings gear option, which optimizes the screen to screen latency to based on these three scenarios, these are Game mode, which minimizes the screen to screen latency to optimize it for gaming, then Video mode, which increases the screen to screen latency to ensure the video that is being played on the project screen plays smoothly, and then Productivity mode, which is the middle of the three modes, in this mode, the screen to screen latency is responsive enough, so that the user can type normally, and that videos don't bug out too often.
- Added support for the WebAuthN version of the Web Authentication API in Microsoft Edge.
- RSAT (Remote Server Administration Tools) is now a Feature on Demand.
- Added a new post-upgrade OOBE experience.
Bugs[edit | edit source]
General[edit | edit source]
- After updating to this build, Mixed Reality Portal will reinstall the Mixed Reality Software, and as a result, the environment setting is not preserved.
- There may be random reliability and performance issues when the Start menu is launched.
- There's a random chance of encountering a green screen of death with the error code
CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED
. - Surface Studio devices can't upgrade to this build because of an error saying "Your PC hardware is not supported on this version of Windows 10".
Sets & Office[edit | edit source]
- The top of some Win32 desktop apps may appear slightly underneath the tab bar when they're opened maximized. To fix this issue, restore and re-maximize the affected window.
- Sometimes closing one tab can minimize the entire set.
- Tiling and cascading windows do not work for inactive tabs.
- Opening an Office document while the same app has an existing document open may cause an unintended switch to the last active document. It can also happen if you close a sheet in Excel while other sheets are open.
- Locally stored files and cloud files that are on non-Microsoft cloud services are not automatically restored.
