Windows 10 build 17604 is the first Insider Preview build of Windows 10 October 2018 Update. This build was released to Windows Insiders that were opted into Skip Ahead on 14 February 2018.

Changes[edit | edit source]

  • Updated some of the emoji designs.
  • You can find an emoji by keyword in over 150 languages and locales, including British English, French, German, Spanish and many more.
  • You have more control over UWP apps accessing the file system. Selected UWP apps will be granted permission to have broad file system access. If an app has the file system access restricted, a consent message will pop up, asking the user if they want to confirm or deny the request.
  • Added a new Settings page for file system access. Here, you can turn it on or off for each app that has requested this capability. UWP apps with broad file system access do not appear in the Photos, Videos, or Documents privacy settings pages.
  • Added a new power management scheme called "Ultimate Performance". This is only available in the Pro for Workstations SKU.
  • Made the tiles for some UWP app placeholders when you connect to the internet on the Pro for Workstations SKU productivity and enterprise focused instead of being consumer focused.

Bugs[edit | edit source]

  • Three and four finger gestures on the touchpad can become unresponsive in this build.
  • Sometimes the Japanese IME won't work in UWP apps. If this bug is encountered, switch to a Win32 application, turn on the IME there, and then switch back to the UWP app.
  • Plugging in an external DVD drive will make Explorer.exe crash.
  • Bringing up the Game bar using the Xbox button on an Xbox One controller does not work in some games.
  • In the text box for Mixer stream title, using non-character keys such as Tab ↹, Del or Backspace ← may cause the game to freeze for a few seconds.
  • Selecting a notification after taking a screenshot or game clip opens the Xbox app's home screen instead of opening the screenshot or game clip.
  • In some games, mouse and keyboard input will still go to that game while the Game bar is open.
  • Buttons on the Game bar are not centered correctly.
  • Settings will crash if the Themes settings page is opened.
  • A small number of devices that have this build can encounter a scenario where the OS would enter a reboot loop instead of booting into the operating system.
  • Tearing off (separating a tab from a window, so it opens as another window) a PDF tab on Microsoft Edge will cause the system to crash with a green screen of death.
