Talk:Windows 11 build 25309
Regarding the Windows App SDK based File Explorer that is currently in development...[edit source]
The underlining code for the File Explorer has remained pretty largely unchanged since its introduction in Windows 95. However, it seems that Microsoft wants to make some major changes to File Explorer. Apparently, Microsoft is rewritting File Explorer to be based on the modern Windows App SDK to allow for the implementation of more modern features and better intergrations with Microsoft's services such as Microsoft 365 and OneDrive.
However, this rewritting of code for a large-scale core system Windows application like File Explorer could introduce huge compatibility issues especially for many Windows programs that currently rely on the legacy Win32 based File Explorer. One good example is ExplorerPatcher which is a program that I use on my Windows 11 desktop PC to bring back legacy features such as the Ribbon UI and the Windows 10 taskbar and relies on the Win32 File Explorer that is currently in Windows 11. This could cause many problems down the line but, it is yet to be determined as this build has just been recently released.
I have heard many concerns from many users online since the recent WinUI community call nearly 2 weeks ago. Sure, these changes will allow for a more modern File Explorer to blend in well with Windows 11 and allow modern features and intergrations but since the Windows App SDK has many limitations compared to the more standard and superior Win32 API and since it is still very new, the potential of compatibility issues is still rather up in the air.
