SuSE Linux 8.0

SuSE Linux 8.0 is a version of openSUSE, released on 22 April 2002. It shipped with Linux kernel 2.4.18, and KDE 3.0.0.

Installation[edit | edit source]

  • Hardware detection is improved by the automated installation.
  • YaST2 now detects existing Windows partitions, and makes suggestions for allocating hard disk space and software selection, and also provides a module for the configuration of special hardware components such as joysticks. Even output devices such as touch screens, vertical LCDs, 3D solutions, and multi-head systems can be configured easily with SaX2 (SUSE advanced X configuration).

  • KDE 3 and KOffice are added to this version.

Media[edit | edit source]

  • Enhanced CD writing, viewing and editing videos and sound mixing with an editing studio and synthesizer.
  • Added version 0.9 of Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) in support of most professional and personal sound cards. Popular games such as "Vegastrike", "Racer", "FlightGear", etc., and the adventure game, "Nethack Falconseye" are included.

  • SUSE Personal Firewall 2 now requires a mouse click activation.
  • GNU Privacy Guard (GPG) encryption is added, which protects laptop and desktop data, allowing only authorized users to read e-mail stored within SUSE Linux.
  • Integrate professional e-mail and data security concepts and advanced security technologies including OpenSSH, PAM, and IPsec.
