NEWS-OS (Network Engineering Workstation Operating System) is an operating system developed by Sony for their line of Sony NEWS computers. It was announced in October 1986 after one year of development and released in January of the following year. All versions prior to NEWS-OS 3.9 were released exclusively for the 68k series of processors. NEWS-OS 3.9 was the first version of NEWS-OS to be released in the 68k and MIPS architectures. Version suffixes “R” and “C” denote the type of CPU architecture the operating system is designed to support. Versions with the “C” suffix indicates that it is meant for the 68k processor series, whereas the “R” suffix indicates that it is meant for the MIPS processor series. Support for NEWS-OS was discontinued in 1998.
