Android 4.4 (codenamed KitKat) is the R1 release of Android 4.4, which was committed on 29 October 2013[1], and later released on 31 October 2013.

- A series of optimisations (Codenamed "Project Svelte") to improve performance on devices with 512MB RAM.
- Support for Host Card Emulation (HCE) in NFC.
- Native support for printing.
- A new Storage Access Framework providing a consistent user interface for accessing files.
- Sensor batching, to reduce power usage consumed by sensors.
- Support for full-screen "immersive" applications.
- Support for translucent system UI.
- Screen recording via ADB.
- Implements enough support for Miracast to pass certification.
- System-wide configuration of closed captions.
- SELinux configuration now set to "enforcing" rather than "permissive".
