Android 4.4 (codenamed KitKat) is the R1 release of Android 4.4, which was committed on 29 October 2013[1], and later released on 31 October 2013.

  • A series of optimisations (Codenamed "Project Svelte") to improve performance on devices with 512MB RAM.
  • Support for Host Card Emulation (HCE) in NFC.
  • Native support for printing.
  • A new Storage Access Framework providing a consistent user interface for accessing files.
  • Sensor batching, to reduce power usage consumed by sensors.
  • Support for full-screen "immersive" applications.
  • Support for translucent system UI.
  • Screen recording via ADB.
  • Implements enough support for Miracast to pass certification.
  • System-wide configuration of closed captions.
  • SELinux configuration now set to "enforcing" rather than "permissive".
