AIX (Advanced Interactive eXecutive) is an operating system developed by IBM. It was first released in 1986 for their line of IBM RT computers with the IBM ROMP microprocessor. Later versions of AIX supported a variety of hardware platforms, such as the IBM RS/6000 series, IBM POWER and PowerPC-based systems, and PS/2 personal computers. Currently, AIX supports the Power ISA architecture. The first releases of AIX were developed for the series of IBM RT PC workstations, which is based on the ROMP microprocessor series. AIX for PS/2 was announced in September 1988 and then released one month later in October. Support for AIX PS/2 ended in March 1995.

AIX is based on UNIX System V with 4.3BSD extensions.
