Windows Me build 2404 is a pre-Beta 2 build of Windows Me, originally released on 29 October 1999[1] and was later found on 23 June 2015.[2]

Changes[edit | edit source]

  • Setup now plays a page-turning sound when it advances to another screen.
  • The "Beta One" label has been removed from the boot screen, while HTML Help now features Beta 2 branding.
  • The "code name" wording on the boot screen is now spelled out as "CODENAME".
  • A new "File a bug report" icon is present on the desktop.
  • Added the Internet Games from MSN Gaming Zone, which would be included with later versions of Windows until Windows 7.
  • DirectX has been updated from version 7.0 to 7.1.
  • Windows Installer 1.1 is now included.
  • DVD Player has been updated.
  • Net crawling can now be disabled in Folder Options.
  • Accessibility wizard has been updated.
  • Help and Support UI has changed again.
  • Sounds and Multimedia control panel applets have been combined into a single Sounds and Multimedia applet.
  • The updated "System Configuration" dialog with its two progress bars (introduced in build 2380) during the final part of setup now also appears when upgrading to this build.
  • Game Controllers control panel applet (JOY.CPL) has been upgraded into Game Manager with an additional Settings tab for managing game installations.

Bugs[edit | edit source]

S3 drivers[edit | edit source]

When using S3 video adapters, Windows will complain that its own drivers will not work properly, thus the display will be stuck at 640×480 resolution and 16 colors mode. This error will also appear upon every boot and other drivers cannot be installed correctly, meaning that S3 video adapters are not recommended for this build.

Windows Media Player[edit | edit source]

On some configurations, Windows Media Player does not work in this build and will display a PCHealth general protection fault error upon starting.

Neptune reference[edit | edit source]

Two files named gemstar.sys and wspirdak.sys, with the version number 5.50.5086.1, were found in this Millennium build, but it is unknown whether this Neptune build ever existed.

Some speculate this could be a late Milestone 1 or an early Milestone 2 build. Judging by the file dates, it would have been compiled before 26 October 1999.
