OS X Mavericks, or OS X 10.9, is the tenth major release of the OS X operating system that was released on 22 October 2013. It was announced on 10 June 2013 at WWDC.

It is the first OS X version to be released as a free upgrade on the App Store. It is also the final version of OS X to feature a skeuomorphic user interface design.

  • App Nap was introduced, which sleeps apps that are not currently visible.
  • iCloud Keychain stores a user's usernames and passwords.
  • Added native support for sharing with LinkedIn.
  • Added Compressed Memory.
  • Added Timer coalescing.
  • Added support for IPoTB Thunderbolt networking.
  • Removal of Open Transport API.
  • Enchancements to the Calendar app.
  • AirPlay compatible displays such as the Apple TV can be used as an external display.
  • Finder has acquired tabs, fullscreen support, and document tags.
  • New apps were added: iBooks and Maps.
  • Removal of several skeuomorphic elements.
  • Improvements to Notification Center.
