Mac OS X Panther, or Mac OS X 10.3, is the fourth major release of Mac OS X which was released on 24 October 2003. It is the first version of Mac OS X to have the Safari web browser which replaced the Internet Explorer for Mac browser after a contract between Apple and Microsoft ended.

  • FileVault was added, which is a built-in disk encryption feature.
  • Exposé was added, which is a view that shows thumbnails of all open windows.
  • Fast user switching was added, which allows multiple users to be logged in at the same time.
  • Finder received a major overhaul, featuring an updated icon, brushed-metal interface, support for ZIP files, colored labels, a customizable sidebar, a new search system, and support for secure deletion.
  • The Safari web browser was added, which replaces Internet Explorer for Mac.
  • iChat has been updated to support audio and video conferencing.
  • Added support for the Pixlet video codec in Quicktime, which enables HD video content.
  • The Font Book application has been added for managing installed fonts.
  • TextEdit now supports Microsoft Word documents.
  • Added built-in support for X11.
  • Added built-in support for faxing.
  • Preview has improved PDF rendering.
  • Support for the Journaled version of the Mac OS Extended format was added.
