Windows Server build 25066 is the second Insider Preview build of Windows Server, version 23H2 based on the Copper codebase. It was released to Windows Insiders on 2 March 2022, along with Nickel build 22567.

New features and changes[edit | edit source]

Taskbar[edit | edit source]

On 2-in-1 PCs, the taskbar will automatically shrink into a compact view with a bottom bar when the keyboard is detached. The Start icon and all pinned apps will be hidden. Users can swipe up the bottom bar to switch back to the full view. This behavior can be changed with the "Automatically hide the taskbar when using your device as tablet" option under Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors page in the Settings app.

Shell[edit | edit source]

  • Three of the most recent Microsoft Edge tabs will be displayed as suggested windows by default in snap assist if the Edge window is snapped.
  • The updated accessibility flyout on the login screen, initially introduced in build 25057, has been rolled out to all users.
    • The positioning of the flyout above the button has also been improved.
  • A small animation has been added to hint the creation of a new folder when hovering one pinned app icon over another in the Start menu.
  • The ability to mute and unmute the audio by clicking the volume icon in the hardware indicator for volume has been added.
  • The icon used for hiding key press visuals in the touch keyboard when focus is set to a password field has been updated.
  • The accessibility flyout on the Lock screen's location and spacing will be centered and consistent with the design of other options.
  • The volume flyout has been updated when using the hardware keys on keyboard to account for cases where there is no working audio.
  • The auto-hide taskbar will now stay expanded while using Task view to switch desktops.
  • The UI appearance when dragging an item over the taskbar or any UWP app's window frame has been updated to respond to dark mode and contrast themes.
  • The mute icon in the taskbar has been updated so that the tooltip now gives a hint for the keyboard shortcut ⊞ Win+Ctrl+K.
  • The fade-in/out animation for newly added or removed recommended items in the Start menu has been added.
  • The input switcher background color will now follow the custom accent color if "Show accent color on Start and Taskbar" option is enabled in color settings.
  • The smoothness of the animation when invoking Task View using the 3-finger on screen gesture has been improved.
  • The margins for snapping to the left and right side of the screen has been made a little bigger.
  • The search icon on the taskbar has been mirrored.
  • The reliability for using the taskbar to bring an already running app to the foreground has been improved.
  • The reliability of invoking snap layouts at the top of the screen has been improved.
  • The "Open With" dialog box has been redesigned to align with the design aesthetics of Windows 11.
    • This feature is only available to a subset of users, but can be enabled by enabling the 36302090 velocity ID.
  • A new panel has been added to the Quick Settings flyout for managing Bluetooth devices.
    • This feature is only available to a subset of users, but can be enabled by enabling the 35221101 velocity ID.

  • Several pages across the app have been updated to adopt WinUI controls.
  • The search experience has been improved to provide a more accurate set of search results as well as bring more relevant search results up to the top of the list.
  • The ability to search for pages related to the live captions settings has been added.
  • The "live captions" option has been added to the main Accessibility page (listed under Captions section).
  • The Braille display input and output table type dropdowns has been updated to have a default value.
  • The Action history subpage under Privacy & security page has been redesigned in order to align with the design aesthetics of Windows 11.
    • This change is disabled by default, but can be enabled by enabling the 29755179 velocity ID.

Narrator[edit | edit source]

  • Narrator will consistently announce that it's reading from a pop-up dialog when reading its message.
  • Narrator will announce the name of the page and the focused element correctly when using Microsoft Edge's History page.
  • Narrator will read the errors, warnings, tips & intelligent services section correctly when clicking Review > Check Accessibility entry in Microsoft Excel.

Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]

  • The system requirement warning message above the watermark, first appeared in build 25057, has been changed to "System requirements not met. Go to Settings to learn more".
  • New touch gestures have been added for swiping up or down with three fingers to minimize or restore all open windows.
  • A new group policy for toggling Windows Update notifications on and off has been added.
  • Search from Quick Access has been expanded to include content from OneDrive, Downloads, and any indexed location.
  • 37 new emoji characters (as part of Emoji 14.0) have been added to the emoji picker.
  • The ability to choose the skin tones between the two hands in the hand-shake emoji has been added.
  • Several previously available features related to the voice typing have been rolled out to all users:
    • The ability to download Speech Packs from the Microsoft Store (initially introduced in build 22538).
    • The ability to choose which microphone to use in voice typing when multiple microphones are connected to the device (initially introduced in build 25057).
    • Four new commands for typing ↵ Enter, ← Backspace, Spacebar, and Tab ↹ (initially introduced in build 25057).
  • The support of relative paths for Windows Sandbox mapped folders has been added.
  • Some improvements have been made to the emoji search results, including generally putting a stronger preference in the search results to the exact name match of emoji (for example, the balloon emoji first when searching for balloon) over the various other emoji that might be returned for those keywords.
  • Files in Quick Access without any local presence (for example, files shared to users from another OneDrive) will now show thumbnails and work with OneDrive sharing.
  • The performance of launching the input switcher for the first time has been improved.
  • Some texts have been added to show Disconnecting to communicate if work is in progress after the Disconnect button in the VPN section of Quick Settings is clicked.
  • The performance of displaying the content in the Recycle Bin has been improved, in cases where there were many files.
  • The input switching responsiveness when using ↵ Enter+Spacebar has been improved.
  • The reliability of invoking snap layouts at the top of the screen has been improved.
  • The branding in Setup has been changed to Windows Server instead of "Windows Server 2022", and the OS logo has been changed to Windows Server instead of Windows Server 2022's one in the first two pages.
