New features and changes[edit | edit source]

Hyper-V[edit | edit source]

This is the earliest available build of Windows Server to include the Hyper-V hypervisor (at the time dubbed the Windows Virtualization Service), which was previously only available in internal development branches. It can be used to host virtualized computer systems for a variety of purposes and applications, such as database management, mission critical systems or file storage. The hypervisor can be enabled by installing updates KB939853 and KB939854, present in the Windows\wsv directory.

Later builds of Windows Server 2008 would eventually introduce the Hyper-V Server edition, itself a cut down command-line-based version of Windows Server purpose-built for virtualization solutions.
