Windows 11 build 25197 is the twenty-third Insider Preview and the seventeenth available client build of Copper, the 23H1 development semester of Windows as a service. It was released to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel on 8 September 2022, along with its server counterpart.

Shell[edit | edit source]

  • The tablet-optimized taskbar, re-introduced in build 25193, has been rolled out to a subset of users.
    • This feature can be manually enabled by running ViVeTool from an elevated Command Prompt window to enable the 26008830 velocity ID.
      • To enable this feature on any devices (including non-touchscreen devices), enable the velocity ID and merge the following registry entry:

  • The unified hitboxes for Win32 system tray icons and the "show hidden icons" flyout, re-introduced in build 25193, have been rolled out to a subset of users.
    • This change will be applied only if the tablet-optimized taskbar is enabled on the device.

  • The wording on Start Menu's search box has been changed to "Find your apps, files, and settings".

Windows Spotlight[edit | edit source]

When right-clicking the "Learn more about this picture" icon on the desktop, a new UI showing details about the wallpaper will appear at the bottom of the screen.

  • This feature is disabled by default, but can be enabled by running ViVeTool from an elevated Command Prompt window to enable the 39710659, 39880030 and 40268500 velocity IDs.

Settings[edit | edit source]

  • The animated icons in the left navigation panel, initially introduced in build 25188, have been rolled out to a subset of users.
    • This feature can be enabled by running ViVeTool from an elevated Command Prompt window to enable the 34878152 velocity ID.
  • The Startup and App Execution Alias pages have been redesigned to align with the design aesthetics of other Settings pages.
  • The Personal Dictionary section under the Inking & Typing Personalization page has been renamed to "Custom word list".

Task Manager[edit | edit source]

  • The reliability of Task Manager has been improved.
  • The circles used to identify each of the different sections has been updated to be less blurry if graphs have been hidden on the Performance page.
  • The ability to generate a live kernel dump, partially introduced in build 25188, is functional in this build.
    • This feature is disabled by default, but can be enabled by running ViVeTool from an elevated Command Prompt window to enable the 40430431 velocity ID.

Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]

The performance of deleting files via File Explorer in the case where there are a large number of files being deleted at once has been improved.

Bugfixes[edit | edit source]

General[edit | edit source]

  • Fixed an issue which could lead to hangs in certain apps when attempting to print if an IPP printer took too long to respond to the print request.
  • Fixed an issue where EnumPrinters wasn’t always returning the correct size for pcbNeeded, which could lead to hangs in certain programs.
  • Fixed a typo in the dialog displayed when Smart App Control blocked an app.
  • Fixed an issue where certain characters were missing in the boot environment when using the Chinese (Simplified) or Korean display languages, leading to square boxes in the text.

Tablet-optimized taskbar[edit | edit source]

  • Fixed an issue causing the taskbar to flash in the system tray in non-tablet-optimized scenarios.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing parts of the taskbar or its icons like search to get stuck in the wrong theme's colors when switching between light and dark themes.
  • Fixed an issue causing the date and time to get stuck cutting off on the side of the screen from system tray changes.

File Explorer[edit | edit source]

Fixed an issue causing File Explorer to fail to open if the "Launch folder windows in a separate process" option in Folder Options is enabled.

  • Fixed a crash when using Start's recommended section.
  • Fixed an issue causing Task View to be closed unexpectedly when clicking the title bar portion of a preview thumbnail in it.
  • Fixed a sporadic explorer.exe crash which could happen when using Alt+Tab ↹ or Task View.

Input[edit | edit source]

  • Fixed an issue causing ctfmon.exe to crash in recent builds when words were added to the spelling dictionary.
  • Fixed an issue where dragging the voice typing window to another monitor which has a different scaling than the originating monitor won't work correctly.
  • Fixed a sporadic crash in recent builds when using the input switcher.
  • Fixed an issue which could lead to voice typing and other input features hanging on initialization.
  • Fixed an issue with displaying certain Sinhala words, where they were unexpectedly overlapping.

Fixed an issue causing the weather icon in the taskbar to be drew too high and with no text.

Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]

General[edit | edit source]

  • The audio may stop working in certain cases.
  • Several apps may crash on launch in certain cases.
  • Users may experience bugchecks when moving the mouse in certain games.
  • The OneDrive setup may appear to ask for permission to set up every time Windows reboots.
    • Disabling OneDriveSetup.exe from opening at startup may resolve this issue.

Tablet-optimized taskbar[edit | edit source]

  • The taskbar may sometimes flash when transitioning between desktop posture and tablet posture.
  • The taskbar may take longer than expected to transition to the touch-optimized version when switching between desktop posture and tablet posture.
  • Using the left or right edge gestures may cause the Widgets or Notification Center (respectively) to overlap with or look truncated by the taskbar.
  • The taskbar may sometimes stay stuck in the expanded state instead of dismissing to collapsed state when using the bottom right edge gesture to see Quick Settings.
  • The taskbar may sometimes collapse unexpectedly when there are no running windows on the desktop.

File Explorer[edit | edit source]

The command bar items, such as copy, paste, and empty recycle bin, may unexpectedly not be enabled.

Settings[edit | edit source]

Users may be unable to uninstall certain apps under the Installed apps page.

Shell[edit | edit source]

On some locales, the default font used in several UI elements (such as the date and time on the taskbar) may change to regular Segoe UI instead of Segoe UI Variable.

Virtualization[edit | edit source]

  • Users may experience a UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR bugcheck when booting Windows in VMware on a Hyper-V enabled host with 2 or more cores allocated.
  • The system may fail to boot in VMware with attached network adapters.

Widgets[edit | edit source]

  • The Notification badge number may appear misaligned on the taskbar.
  • The Notification banner for some badging may not appear in the Widgets board in some cases.

Safe mode[edit | edit source]

  • Quick Settings and date/time clock on the taskbar may be missing due to the Capability Access Manager Service service not running.
  • Clicking Bluetooth & devices and Personalization pages may crash the Settings app due to an overrun of a stack-based buffer 0xc0000409.
