Windows 11 build 23435 is an Insider Preview build of Nickel, the 22H2 development semester of Windows as a service. It was released to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel on 14 April 2023.

New features and changes[edit | edit source]

File Explorer[edit | edit source]

  • The File Explorer based on Windows App SDK, previously available in build 23403, has been rolled out to all users.
  • The Gallery page, initially implemented in build 25272, has been refined and rolled out to a subset of users. This feature can be toggled on manually by enabling the 41040327 velocity ID.

Shell[edit | edit source]

  • The update to the dot-style notification badge on the Start menu's user profile icon, initially introduced in build 25309, has been backported to this build. This change is only available to a subset of users.
  • The Snap Assist has been updated to suggest and remember customized layouts for specific groups of applications. This feature is disabled by default, but can be toggled on manually by enabling the 41863571 and 42589465 velocity IDs.
  • The ability to open the Search flyout when hovering over the search icon on the taskbar has been implemented. This feature is disabled by default, but can be toggled on manually by enabling the 43572692 and 43572857 velocity IDs, and then toggling the switch under Personalization > Taskbar in the Settings app.

Settings[edit | edit source]

A new "Presence sensing" subpage has been added under the Privacy & security page for managing presence sensor privacy settings.

Task Manager[edit | edit source]

The performance of the expand all / collapse all View options on the Processes page has been improved.

Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]

  • The Narrator detailed reading feature has been updated to support Traditional Chinese (Taiwan).
  • The Narrator's default for "Context level for buttons and controls" has been updated to "3 – Immediate content name and type."
  • The TextInput/EnableTouchKeyboardAutoInvokeInDesktopMode MDM policy has been updated to allow 2 as a valid value to enforce showing the touch keyboard on tapping an edit control even when the hardware keyboard is attached.

Bugfixes[edit | edit source]

  • Fixed a few explorer.exe crashes that were impacting taskbar reliability.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing the Settings app to crash when navigating to various Windows Update related pages.
  • Fixed the issue that was causing speech recognition support installed through the Language & Region settings page to require restarting live captions if users switch languages in the live captions Caption language menu on ARM64 devices.
  • Fixed the issue that was causing the install completion of Enhanced speech recognition to be hidden when adding a language through the Language & Region page in the Settings app.

Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]

File Explorer[edit | edit source]

  • The access keys in the XAML context menu may appear inconsistently if no button is pressed. Pressing a button will cause them to reappear.
  • Clicking on the Share command may bring up the Windows share sheet (non-OneDrive) when the file recommendations feature is enabled.
  • The following issues will only apply if the Gallery page is enabled:
    • The page may require clicking twice on the node in the navigation pane for initial load.
    • Users may experience thumbnail loading performance for dehydrated cloud files and memory usage in large collections.
    • Photos from OneDrive for Business currently must be hydrated to work properly.
    • Some file types (e.g., .HEIC) may not be rendered correctly or performantly.

Shell[edit | edit source]

Right-clicking a file or folder while pressing ⇧ Shift may not open the legacy context menu in certain cases.

Settings[edit | edit source]

Certain languages shown on the Language & Region page may indicate speech recognition support but don't yet have support for live captions.

Live captions[edit | edit source]

  • Live captions may crash on first launch due to an issue impacting registry data retrieval.
  • Captioning performance may be degraded in non-English languages and missing out-of-language filtering in non-English (United States) languages.

Safe mode[edit | edit source]

  • Quick Settings and date/time clock on the taskbar may be missing due to the Capability Access Manager Service service not running.
  • Clicking Bluetooth & devices and Personalization pages may crash the Settings app due to an overrun of a stack-based buffer 0xc0000409.
