Windows 10 build 14986.1000 is the fourteenth officially released Insider Preview build of Windows 10 Creators Update. This build was released to Windows Insiders in the Fast Ring on 7 December 2016, then to Slow Ring users on 14 December 2016.

New features and changes[edit | edit source]

  • Numerous new features and commands were added to Cortana. Highlights include the ability to shutdown the PC by asking Cortana, as well as the ability to restart, lock, and put the PC into standby with your voice.
  • Added natural language compatibility for iHeartRadio and TuneIn Radio for Cortana. You can even use it on the lock screen. This only works on the EN-US version. You can also control the volume and playback using your voice. What's playing support was added.
  • Cortana can now recognize music for Chinese users.
  • Major improvements were made to Cortana's appearance when using "Hey Cortana" when the PC is unlocked and idle.
  • The ability to sign-in using Cortana on an Azure Active Directory (AAD) identity was added.
  • Added a UI for Enterprise Cloud Printers, which is located in Settings -> Devices -> Printers and scanners. This feature enables corporate users to discover corporate printers when on Azure Active Directory joined devices. This feature requires backend services to function, which were not available at the time of this build's release.
  • Added support for 19 additional games with the Windows Game Bar, as detailed in the release announcement.
  • Various improvements to Windows Ink Workspace. Highlights include the ability to resume previous sketches in Screen Sketch, an updated flyout for the Windows Ink pen, pencil and highlighter tools. It shows a preview of what the tool looks like with the selected color and width. The flyouts were updated as well to remove duplicate color entries when in High Contrast, as well as adding support for using the Esc key to close the flyout, as well as automatically dismissing the flyout once you choose a color or width. The ruler was updated to rotate in sub-degree increments when you touch it, which makes it easier to line it up with two points on the screen. The cursor now no longer appears when you're inking.
  • Updated the rendering technology for UWP app content.
  • Numerous improvements to Narrator. Highlights include it giving you additional information about fonts, colors, line spacing, margins etc. The Context Awareness level is now set to 2. This results in it reading additional areas on the Start menu and Office's Ribbon UI, as well as other areas. The key to get advanced information about the item in focus has been changed from Caps Lock+F to Caps Lock+0.
  • Added File Explorer's keyboard shortcuts into Registry Editor.
  • Changed the priority of the USB Audio 2.0 driver to be prefered over third-party drivers.
  • Improved the update experience. If Windows Update cannot find a suitable time to restart the PC to apply the latest updates, you will be prompted to either restart now, schedule a different time for the update, or “Remind me later”.
  • Improved high-DPI support for desktop apps.
  • This is the first official build to include the View 3D Preview app.
  • Various improvements for the Chinese and Japanese IMEs. Highlights include improvements to the Microsoft Pinyin IME candidate pane. It is now easier to find a suitable candidate word. A small icon was added to indicate when a particular cloud candidate is trending. A new context menu for the Microsoft Pinyin and Wubi IMEs was added. It contains options to easily access the selected IME's settings page or showing the language bar.
  • Microsoft Pinyin IME now supports importing and exporting self-learned phrases. This means if you reinstall the PC or have multiple PCs to maintain, the same user lexicon can be kept.
  • The Wubi IME was updated to support user-defined phrases.
  • The Simplified Chinese writing panel now supports line mode, just like the Japanese IME. Two editing gestures were also added, a strikethrough for deleting text and a circle for grouping.
  • Improvements to the Japanese IME. Highlights include the ability to remove text prediction candidates, as well as improving the conversion accuracy. It also included some bugfixes as well.
  • Windows Defender has been heavily revamped, from a Win32 desktop app to a UWP app.

Bugs[edit | edit source]

  • Using keyboard monitor hotkeys to adjust the brightness won't work as expected. You can change the brightness manually via the Action Center or by navigating to Settings -> System -> Display.
  • There's a chance of a “Catastrophic Error” dialog when opening OneDrive folders. If this occurs, open an elevated Command Prompt or PowerShell and type in attrib -O <path to OneDrive failure that resulted in the error dialog>”
  • DirectAccess does not work on some configurations.
  • When using Microsoft Edge with Narrator, you may hear "no item in view" or silence when navigating through tabs or using other navigation commands.
  • Hey Cortana, play (song) on (app name) doesn’t work immediately after installing the app. Wait five minutes for the indexer to activate and try again.
  • The new Windows Defender is in an early state in this build, so most of the features are either missing or incomplete.

Paint 3D[edit | edit source]

  • Upon opening Paint 3D, it will proceed to replace all of the options linking to the classic Paint app with Paint 3D. You can either uninstall it or do the following below if you want to keep it:
1. Open Registry Editor.
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Paint.
3. Create a new key called Settings.
4. In that new key you just created, create a DWORD entry called "DisableModernPaintBootstrap" and set its value to 1.
