Windows Longhorn build 4005 is a Milestone 4 build of Windows Longhorn. On 23 January 2020, this build was listed on a thread by UX.Unleaked blog founder Grabberslasher to be released to BetaArchive's FTP server, and was released in the second set of his 33 Longhorn/Vista builds on 25 January 2020, alongside build 4039 (Lab06_n.030824-1954) and the Home Edition of build 3790.1232.[1]

This build is notable for introducing many major updates to its Setup procedure and branding.

It is also the last build to use centered title bars for non-maximized windows, which were later reintroduced in Windows 8 build 7779.

New features and changes[edit | edit source]

The Setup interface has received a major design overhaul, now featuring a less primitive user interface.

Setup[edit | edit source]

Setup is now aligned to the middle instead of being aligned to the left. A new Longhorn flag is now also shown on top.

Unlike build 4001, characters used for product key input are no longer capitalized, the EULA page no longer requires the user to scroll to the bottom of the page to accept or reject, with two radio buttons now being independently shown instead, a new step that allows the user to upgrade or clean install Longhorn was added, and drive partitioning now features details of each disk, along with their associated partitions.

The file copy phase now also includes detailed information on what is currently being performed in the background.

After the second restart, the user is greeted with a mostly empty page that asks the user to simply wait for an unspecified period of time. At this point, Setup will automatically detect installed hardware and attempt to finalize the install. This phase is most commonly referred to as the "hardware portion". After Setup finishes, the user will then be presented with the out-of-box experience.

User interface[edit | edit source]

Branding[edit | edit source]

A new winver.exe banner is now included, which depicts the Longhorn flag and text on a blue, abstract background.

Shell[edit | edit source]

The clock seen on the new taskbar now features AM/PM intervals. It now also updates automatically, no longer requiring an Explorer restart.

Sidebar tiles now feature a shorter appearance, with each gadget title being shrunk or completely removed.

Windows Explorer and Control Panel[edit | edit source]

New "Show the contents of this drive" and "Switch to Classic/Category View" options have been added, allowing the user to view system drives, folders and miscellaneous Control Panel applets. A non-functional "Tasks" left pane was also added.

The Longhorn "clock" is now present in the bottom right of the "These files are hidden." message.

Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]

Windows Media Player has been updated to version 9.00.00.2980.

Findings[edit | edit source]

Hidden sidebar tiles[edit | edit source]

Unlike build 4002, this build contains only three hidden sidebar tiles:

  • RMA Test Tile - A tile which can be used when applications are minimized and offer simple functionality. RMA stands for 'Rich Minimized Application'.[2]
  • Internet Webcam - Which links to a live image of a Redmond, Washington, USA freeway.
  • Windows Media Player - While identical to the one found in build 3713, it is not functional and crashes when the user tries to open a file.

To enable these tiles, merge the following code into the registry and then restart Explorer:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

; RMA Test Tile
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartBar\Modules\RMA Test Tile]

"AssemblyName"="Microsoft.Windows.Client"
"Friendly Name"="RMA Test"
"Type"="System.Windows.Desktop.RMATestTile"

; Internet Webcam
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartBar\Modules\Internet WebCam]

"AssemblyName"="ShellInterop"
"Friendly Name"="Internet WebCam"
"Type"="System.Windows.Desktop.StartBarInternetTile"

; Windows Media Player Tile
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartBar\Modules\{8424cd74-e3d3-4bc7-87ad-15f569922c1a}]

"AssemblyName"="ShellInterop"
"Friendly Name"="Windows Media Player"
"Type"="System.Windows.Desktop.WMPTile"

Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]

Installation[edit | edit source]

  • On some machines that use IDE emulation, Setup will hang when reading from the installation media.
  • Unpartitioned drives cannot be selected for installation. To setup from a hard drive without any partitions, select the disk that Windows will be installed on. Otherwise, the user can partition and format a drive outside of this build's setup.
  • Despite not being compiled in evaluation mode, this build can boot on the current date.
  • The OOBE will crash upon attempting to create a user account.

General[edit | edit source]

  • This build is often unstable and can crash randomly at certain times.
  • The sidebar will fail to render properly when adjusting the resolution.

Desktop Compositing Engine[edit | edit source]

When Desktop Composition Engine is enabled, it renders the graphics on the hardware layer, while the software layer is rendered as black or leftover data, which means that attempting to use software capturing methods (such as Print Screen) will not produce the screen correctly. Most hypervisors only renders the software layer, usually resulting in a black screen upon starting DCE.

New file sharing wizard[edit | edit source]

The new file sharing wizard does not function properly, resulting an Explorer crash after the first page.

Control Panel[edit | edit source]

Display Properties mentions the Luna theme as the Plex theme.

Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]

The winver banner shows 2006 as a copyright date (possibly a typo).
