Windows XP Professional x64 Edition build 3599 is the earliest known build of Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. The registry hives for this build are present in the Windows Server 2003 source code.

This build is a private compile, as evidenced by the username in the build tag. It was built by David Cutler, a primary architect of Windows NT, who led development of Windows on AMD64. At the time of this build's compilation, AMD64-based builds of Windows NT were run under dedicated CPU simulators as physical machines were not readily available at Microsoft's disposal until 7 February 2002, one month after the build had been compiled.

Subject: A day in history

Today at 3pm we received the first AMD64 K8 based hardware system from AMD.

Today at 5pm we booted and are running the 64-bit versions of Windows XP on the AMD64 K8 system.

We are even running 32-bit apps under wow64!

The hardware system is unbelievably solid for a chip that just popped out of the oven a mere month ago.

In addition to running the 64-bit system we can dual boot into the 32-bit version of XP as well on the very same hardware without any changes!

Thanks are due to a great many people for their help and support in making this happen.

Watch this space for more news coming soon!

This accomplishment is a testimonial to great planning and execution by the entire Hammer team. We have a long way to go, but this is truly a major milestone in the hammer program. Thank you and congradulations to everyone who made this possible.
